Mencia was once a little-known grape, found in Spain and Portugal. Thought to be related to Cabernet Franc, Graciano and Garnacha, Mencia has since been found to have its own unique DNA, with likely roots to the Bierzo region of Northwest Spain. Legend has it that the grape made its way to Portugal, where it is called Jaen, via pilgrims on the trail of Santiago de Compostela. For years, it was dismissed as a table wine; today, it is skyrocketing in popularity for its medium-bodied texture and high quality. Those who like low-alcohol wines with balanced acidity will rejoice in discovering another charming grape varietal!
