Portugal 0has a very long history of winemaking: their legendary Ports and Madeiras spring to mind, with spritzy Vinho Verde as another known export. But: this is arguably the only European country who’s always championed their own native grapes, not jumping onto the bandwagon of planting “international varieties” like Cabernet, Chardonnay and the like. We’ll explore this small terroir-packed country’s historic regions and exotic-sounding grapes, travelling through the Douro’s granite terraces, the Dao (gnarly Baga reds), coastal Bairrada, Lisboa, and warm Alentejano in the southeast (cork country). Exotic sounding native white varietals include Loureiro, Trajadura, Maria Gomes, Encruzado, Malvasia-Fina, and Rabigato. Reds are made from Tinta Roriz (a.k.a Aragonez a.k.a Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional (Port’s superstar), Touriga Franca (its rival), Alfrocheiro, Alicante Bouschet, and Trincadeira. Join us for a foray into the unknown!
