“Oregon” and “Pinot Noir” are synonymous for sure, but there’s far deeper oeno-diversity to explore! Although wine has been made here since the late 1800s, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that true development of a wine industry started, based in the Willamette Valley’s Dundee Hills. Today, there are over 700 wineries, with French Burgundy houses and prominent American sommeliers making wine here. Oregon actually has a wide range of climates and terroirs, from the cool and wet north (Willamette) to the drier, warmer south (Rogue and Umpqua valleys), and this range spells variety. Pinot Gris has long dovetailed with Pacific Salmon, but Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and rosés are notable. In the south, you’ll find plantings of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo. We’ll look for a range of varieties to add spice, but King Pinot Noir will show its face, maybe from one of the newer AVA’s such as Ribbon Ridge, Eola-Amity Hills, Chehalem Mountains, Columbia Gorge…
