Join us for a very interesting exploration of the “The Old World beyond the Known (France, Spain Italy, Germany…), touching down in countries whose exciting modern wines often reflect the freedom acquired after the fall of Communism.  In Hungary, we’ll taste beautifully aromatic dry Furmint from Tokaj, and Blaufrankisch from the southern lowlands of the Danube.  We’ll taste Riesling from Slovenia which borders Friuli; it’s not uncommon for their best winemakers to have to cross the border to harvest!  From Macedonia (a.k.a. “Northern Greece” to a Greek) we’ll try Rkatsiteli, a white made from an ancient Georgian grape.  We’ll explore exceptional examples of modern Greek wine from the Peloponnese in the south (Moschofilero & Aghiorgitiko), Naoussa in the north (tannic Xinomavro) and Epanomi in the northeast (resurrected Malagousia).  We’ll touch down in the Ankara region in Turkey’s Central Anatolia.  Who knows, a wine from Moravia or Bohemia in the Czech Republic might make it into this intriguing mix!
