Miljenko "Mike" Grgich first gained international fame in 1976 at the Paris Tasting when his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay from Napa Valley was chosen the finest wine in the world. That international recognition laid the groundwork for the creation of Grgich Hills Cellar in 1977 in partnership with Austin Hills and Hills' sister, Mary Lee Strehl, of Hills Bros. Coffee Co. With its 2003 vintage, all Grgich Hills wines were labeled "Estate Grown." In recognition of that milestone, the winery changed its name to Grgich Hills Estate and remains committed to making distinctive wine with quality consistency and longevity. In 2008, Miljenko Grgich was inducted into the Vintners Hall of Fame in recognition of his many contributions to the wine industry. Now 94, Mike still sports his signature blue beret.
