NanaSteak with Mount Eden

Sponsored by Rich Goodin & Janet Sellers

Mount Eden Vineyards

The wines of Mount Eden Vineyards are consistently recognized as among the finest expressions of California wine.  The estate traces its history back to the iconic Paul Masson and Ray Martin, and along the way Merry Edwards also made the wine for a brief time. Since 1981 Jeffrey Patterson has guided the winemaking and grape growing at Mount Eden.  His emphasis is on wine growing rather than winemaking; and an obsession with gentleness and naturalness in the handling of the grapes and wines is his ongoing passion. We are privileged to have these wines here to enjoy.

Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate perched at 2000 feet overlooking Silicon Valley in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. Founded in 1945, it is recognized as one of the original “boutique” California winery properties, focusing on small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Mount Eden’s lineage of estate bottled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is the longest in California.  Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, these low-yielding estate vineyards have consistently produced world-class wines for over a half-century. In 2007 Mount Eden acquired an additional 55 acre wine estate in the Saratoga foothills, which was christened Domaine Eden.

Mount Eden Vineyards also produces non-estate Chardonnays from the central coast, primarily Edna Valley. They have great success making Chardonnay from the Wolff Vineyard and are continually recognized as making outstanding wines from that region.

Abby Costello, National Sales Manager, is here representing Mount Eden Vineyards and Domaine Eden.

NanaSteak

NanaSteak opened its doors in February 2016 in a newly built space located next to the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) and Aloft Durham Downtown Hotel.

This restaurant is a vision and partnership between husband-and-wife-team, Scott Howell & Aubrey Zinaich-Howell and their long-time friends and former Nana's employees, Tyler Joplin Vanderzee, Brad Weddington and Graham Weddington.

The restaurant boasts a beautiful corner location with abundant natural light. It was designed and built by Jack Moore of Gateway Building Company. In homage to Durham's long tobacco history, the bar top and tables are inlaid with real tobacco leaves, artfully crafted by Artisan Leaf. With windows into the kitchen on the exterior of the building and in the dining room, passerby's and diners alike can enjoy a rare glimpse into the heart of the restaurant.

The NanaSteak family is thrilled to be a part of the New Durham movement downtown--the systematic and loving restoration of our great city one block at a time and the revitalization of culture including new shops, bars, restaurants and hotels.

Chef-Owner Scott Howell can still be spotted delivering dishes to tables in his signature uniform: chef whites, shorts and ball cap. Trained at the Culinary Institute of America, he brought his curiosity, energy and his genteel manners to the New York culinary world.  After graduating from CIA, his quest for culinary perfection led him to italy where he worked for a year at the prestigious San Domenico. In 1990, after experiences at famous restaurants in New York, he followed his heart back to North Carolina where he was the sous chef for a year and a half under acclaimed chef Ben Barker at Magnolia Grill. In 1992 the dream of owning his own restaurant came true with the opening of Nana’s.
