Wamkelekile = The Warmest Welcome from South Africa                                        by Cathy Boyd

This evening’s wines reflect both the variety and the value available from the beautiful country of South Africa. Our event offers both familiar grape varietals alongside indigenous (and probably unfamiliar) grape varietals. Come and try the fruits of the South African winemakers’ labor of love on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 7 p.m.at the Hilton Harrisburg.

PRE-POUR: Graham Beck Brut NV 51% Chardonnay, 49% Pinot Noir. Area of Origin: Western Cape. Graham Beck produces a variety of sparklers and this NV Brut is an excellent introduction. Tasting notes from the winemaker: “Light yeasty aromas, limey fresh fruit on the nose, and rich creamy complexity on the palate.”

Tormentoso Chenin Blanc Reserve 2014 Area of Origin: Paarl. Chenin Blanc is also called ‘Steen’ in South Africa and is one of the country’s signature grapes. This well-crafted Old Vine Chenin Blanc has “an attractive nose of white peach and passionfruit that is well defined, quite floral and elegant.”

Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Area of Origin: Groenekloof. This almost clear colored Sauvignon Blanc opens with mild grapefruit bouquet with a hint of lime and melon. The palate is light bodied and mouthwatering with a dry and nicely lingering finish. The first of two bottles served this evening by Neil Ellis.

Wildekrans Pinotage 2013 Area of Origin: Bot River. Pinotage, a distinctively earthy and rustic variety, is the signature red grape of South Africa. Very little of it is grown outside of the country. Our first Pinotage is medium-bodied showing an assortment of berries on the palate, followed by subtle spice and wood smoke from older French barrels.

Barista Pinotage 2015 Area of Origin: Western Cape. A modern Pinotage, an intense nose of dark, rich coffee with chocolate and cherry hints. Somewhat controversial in style because of the coffee and chocolate enhancement techniques in the winemaking process. Taste the two side by side and decide your favorite!

Glenelly Cabernet Sauvignon Glass Collection Stellenbosch 2013 Area of Origin: Stellenbosch. This charming Cabernet delivers complex flavors of black currant, cherry and dark chocolate. From the winemaker: “Both glass and fine wine come from poor soil, and just as the glassblower breathes life into glass, the winemaker’s love gives life to wine.”

Neil Ellis Shiraz 2010 Area of Origin: Elgin. The PWS procured the few remaining bottles of this wine from the PLCB system and it was worth the effort. We present this bottle knowing that it is not widely available but it is one of the best examples of a Shiraz that we have tasted in some time.

Nederberg Special Late Harvest 2013 Chenin Blanc Area of Origin: Western Cape/Paarl. A spectacular finish to the evening is the dessert style Chenin Blanc. Bright, lemon-yellow, slight honey character, with a lovely sweet palate of pineapple, apricot with fresh acidity.
