Wine & Pairing

What is a good light red wine that will pair well with fall squash soups? I.e. butternut or pumpkin squash soups.
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

For my own tastes, I would think first of a soft, richly flavored white with the same palate feel as a squash soup. Perhaps even with a touch of sweetness if the soup is in that vein. If you prefer red, I would think a round, supple wine without obvious tannin could be complementary. Why not a youthful Cru Beaujolais such as a Fleurie? Or a Grenache-based wine, but not too powerful, such as a Côtes du Rhône, or a Spanish Garnacha from Campo de Borja? A basic California Pinot Noir could work as well if it's ripe and silky with a touch of oak. Or, for something less commonplace, try a red from Spain's Ribeira Sacra made from the Mencia grape which is reminiscent of a Pinot Noir. Well worth discovering if you don't know it.
