The Wine Educator

DAVID E. MUHLEMAN, Ph.D. “The Wine Educator” Dr. Muhleman began his professional career as an Air Force officer; giving him the opportunity to travel the globe and visit many of the great wine producing regions of the world. Building on an academic foundation of an Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree, and Master Degree in Chemistry and Natural Sciences, Dr. Muhleman completed his Ph.D in Education at the age of 31. Dr. Muhleman spent most of his 23 years as an Air Force officer working in adult education, including an assignment as the Educational Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (at the time, GEN Colin Powell). During his assignment in the Pentagon, Dr. Muhleman was also a White House volunteer giving tours and performing many volunteer activities. Upon leaving the Air Force, Dr. Muhleman went into public education; and holds a current state certificate as a secondary science teacher, school principal, and school superintendent. Dr Muhleman was selected as the state’s School Administrator of the Year for 2003. Dr. Muhleman studied wine and viniculture throughout his life, but in 2002 became serious about the study of wine (and spirits) and began working in the wine (and spirits) industry. Later enrolling in the Wine and Spirits Education Trust program and earning an Advanced Certificate (with merit). Still enrolled in the WSET Diploma program, Dr. Muhleman was one of only 20 North American candidates selected into the 2007/2008 Institute of Masters of Wine Educational Program. Dr. Muhleman considers himself a “wine educator” and is often asked to speak on wine, teach wine classes, and several of his educational articles are included in this website. He is a member of several professional and local wine organizations and is a member of the MENSA organization.
