Nestled between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is crafting nifty wines and is now ranked amongst the top four South American�s winemaking countries. Perhaps, best known for their flagship Tannat grape, with a brick red hue, tannins and touch of grittiness (in a good way), they also produce Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, amongst others. But it�s Tannat�s versatility that has paved the way to success. Made in a variety of styles, the Tannat grape is used for fruity roses, everyday bold sippers and well-aging complex reds, which are a terrific with bold fare like steak, stews and stinky cheese. While many Uruguayan wines are produced in stainless steel or epoxy-lined cement, some forward-thinking winemakers are experimenting with smaller American and French oak barrels. Currently, about 25 of Uruguay�s over 280 wineries export to the United States, but more are sure to arrive in U.S. restaurants and store shelves soon. Bodegas Carrau Sust 2002 Brut Nature � Made from 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir, this bone dry sparkler is aged 18 months and shows heavy on yeasty flavors. 2. Bodegas Carrau Sauvignon Blanc Sur Lie 2005 � Overflowing with ripe melon, juicy peach and touch of spiced vanilla, its a bright sipper that is produced specifically for the U.S. market. 3. Castel Pujol Pinot Noir de Reserva 2004 � This classic Burgundian style Pinot has spicy barnyard aromas with red berry fruit and bittersweet chocolate finish. Subtle, yet stark flavors show through, which are perfect for a rustic meal. 4. Don Pascual Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2004 � Sweet black currant leads to a leathery, tobacco belly and slightly astringent. High in acidity, it�s a good food wine. 5. Castel Pujol Tannat de Reserva 2003 � With earthy dark fruit, mostly blackberry and raspberry, it reveals a hint of white pepper and cinnamon through its sturdy body. 6. Don Pascual Tannat Roble 2004 � Sporting soft tannins, smoky, blackberries, black plums and a touch of oak this Tannat has terrific structure and long, strong flavors. 7. Bodegas del Sur Tannat 2005 � Bursting with blackberry, black plum, black pepper and sprinkle of cinnamon, it�s a smooth sipper with savory dark fruit finish.
