Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant Features Williams Selyem With Jeff Mangahas

Please join us Wednesday, April 17th any time between 4:30-7:30 pm, when we welcome Jeff Mangahas to our wine bar. Jeff is the winemaker for Williams Selyem and will present a flight of 2016 vintage Pinot Noirs he curated to tell the story of the multiple, varied sites from which they source fruit. Many allude to wines that speak to a sense of place, but Williams Selyem has achieved this goal with a family of wines that are all unique and nuanced and a tribute to the individual vineyards themselves.
 
Williams Selyem was one of the original ‘garagiste’ labels, meaning it literally started in Burt Williams’ garage in Forestville, California. Burt and his friend, Ed Seylem began experimenting with winemaking on the weekends aside from their day jobs in the 1970s. These two humble men had no idea their namesake wines would go on to become some of the most well regarded Pinot Noirs in the world; they just knew they loved red Burgundy but could no longer afford to buy them and figured they could make great Pinot Noir in Sonoma, releasing their first vintage in 1982. Burt and Ed never owned any vineyards and instead, soured fruit from their grower friends in Russian River Valley. When their 1987 Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir won the Sweepstakes Prize for the Top Wine (among 2,136 entries) at the California State Fair, demand for their wines soared.
 
Burt and Ed’s ride as pioneering partners in elevating Russian River Valley as a great appellation for Pinot Noir came to an end in 1998, when they sold the winery to John Dyson, who invested in the planting of estate vineyards while continuing to source Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel from top vineyards in Sonoma County. The new regime of winemakers headed by Jeff Mangahas has maintained the quality Burt established, and Williams Selyem wines continue to be in high demand today. The featured flight wines will be served as one or two ounce pours, and 5 ounce glasses; the bottles will be available for retail sale while supplies last. The cost of the two ounce flight will be $50.00 and the one ounce flight will be $26.00 or $46/$23 for wine club members and will include the following wines:
