Most people think that Grenache is a French grape as it dominates the wines from the Southern Rhône, but Garnacha actually originated in Spain.  No, Shiraz is not from the Persian city of the same name; as “Syrah”, it was born in France’s northern Rhône Valley.  Cabernet Sauvignon’s origins are in Bordeaux for sure, though Merlot is the most widely planted red variety here and it’s nearly impossible to find a 100% Cab. There’s actually a village in Burgundy named “Chardonnay”, so no surprise that it’s synonymous with White Burgundy. We will showcase 10 different grapes from their original homes, some 100% varietal, some as the majority of a blend. But all born of the terroir that made them famous.
