New Zealand two islands encompass the world’s newest, most exciting wine region, and its most southern and remote too - 1200 miles of ocean separate it from Australia’s Tasmania. New Zealand produces less than 1% of the world’s wine, and most is premium; there’s not enough land for bulk production! Beyond the international sensation of its Sauvignon Blanc, the most widely planted grapes are Pinot Noir (Central Otago), Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Merlot. Riesling, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gewürztraminer are also finding homes in this South Pacific paradise. We’ll explore as many current releases as we can find – look for appellations to include Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, and Central Otago. We can taste while thanking New Zealand’s visionary Screwcap Initiative for worldwide acceptance of the closure.
