Vins de Soif!
Wine can do a lot of things- it can entice or seduce or offer comfort. It can make joyous occasions even more festive but above all wine must always refresh. This week we will taste thirst quenchers, or,as the French say-“Vins de soif”, which essentially means easy drinking wines that are measured not by their complexity, length or ageability but by the joy and refreshment they provide!
The Wines
Michel Fonne Pinot Blanc, Alsace $15.99 – the Wildcard!
Well-rounded yet delicate, combines freshness and softness, representing the happy medium in the range of Alsace wines. Perfect with most foods (seafood, country buffets), cold starters (melon and parma ham, chargrilled vegetables with olive oil).
Chateau l’Ermitage Blanc, Costieres de Nimes $11.99
88 p Decanter. This is an attractive and energetic example with hints of honeysuckle emerging on the nose and mouth. It is broad, fresh and silky on the palate.
Domaine Mas Therese Bandol Rose $18.99 – Silvia’s Favorite!
The Gantelme family has run this vineyard since 1908. In this vintage, the blend allows room for the structure of the Mourvèdre along with the ripe accessible fruits of Grenache and Cinsault. It is a rich wine, full of red-berry flavors and with a food-friendly structure
Le P’tit Spencer, Corbieres $13.99
A juicy blend of Carignan (50%), Mourvèdre (20%), Syrah (15%) and Grenache (15%). Deep red in color with sweet plum fruit and a delightful mineral overlay on the nose. The wine is medium-bodied with supple berry fruit, notes of spice and garrigue. It smooth with soft tannins and a long, juicy finish.
Domaine La Gardette, Ventoux $9.99
Medium to full-bodied, polished, silky and with no hard edges, it has classic Southern Rhone notes of Provencal spices, garrigue, licorice and ripe black raspberries.
