Bordeaux Second Label Tasting
“Second wines in good vintages such as 2009 and 2010 offer brilliant value for money. And the idea of second wines offering access to this quality without waiting for 20 years to open the bottle is also hugely worthwhile.” Decanter
The silver lining in the cloud of rising Bordeaux prices is certainly the increase in quality of Classified Growth Second Labels. Of the 60 Grand Cru wines of the 1855 classification, excluding Sauternes, only Chateau Saint-Pierre has no second wine. While second labels have been around for ages (Pichon Lalande, 1874; Leoville las Cases, 1904; Margaux, 1908; Mouton Rothschild, 1927), it is only in the last 20 years or so that Chateau have begun to dramatically reduce the percentage of their production that is bottled as Grand Vin, freeing up better wines to be included in their second label program. These wines are usually crafted from young vine parcels and lots from older vineyards that are not needed for the main label, are aged in less new oak (and for a shorter time) resulting in wines that are drinkable sooner and at lower prices while still showcasing the quality of the wine and style of the estate.
Join us at Sigel’s-Elite (3209 N Fitzhugh) on Wednesday, June 20th from 5-7pm as we taste through a range of Second Label wines from some of the top Chateau in Bordeaux. Contact Jim Fleming at 214/635-3162 or store04wine@sigels.com for more information on this free tasting.
