Blaufrankisch: Still & Sparkling
Wed May 2, 5-7pm, 20% off sale all day
BLAUFRÄNKISCH (also known as Lemberger)is the primary red grape in Austria, known for blackberry and raspberry flavors with notes of spicy pepper. We found a particularly good one, the Wachter Wiesler, which was written up in the NY Times….made by a “young super-star”. Then, surprisingly, we tasted an awesome sparkling rosé that’s 100% Blaufrankisch. Both have developed a following. Come and find out why.
Tinhof Bubbles Rosé, Blaufrankisch, Sparkling, Burgenland, Austria, 11.5%, Y, Freshly cut red apples on the nose are very appetizing. The palate adds a strawberry note with frothy, refreshing and lively bubbles. This is an exquisite summer wine, spelling ease, joy and refreshment, with a just off-dry finish.
Wachter Wiesler, Blaufrankisch, Fresh Red, Austria, Y, Wild strawberries and red currants with a firm peppery kick in the mid palate and on the finish; fresh and lively in the mouth with good acidity.
After studying wine in Vienna, Montpelier, and the legendary Mas de Daumas-Gassac in Southern France, Erwin Tinhofhas returned to farm the 14ha of vineyards on the slopes of the Leitha Mountains that have been passed down through his family for 11 generations. Farming organically since 2008 (certification came in 2012), Erwin carefully dry-farms the estate, which is home to vines that are up to 50 years old. There is no use of insecticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers, and after hand-harvesting the grapes, the wines are all made with minimal intervention in the cellar.
