We are looking forward to your company on Saturday, April 28th at 6 p.m. for our next BYOB community table dinner. We continue to hear many positive comments about these dinners and know that they meet some important needs. I have always believed in the power of face-to-face communication, lively discourse and of course, the soul-nurturing properties of a home-cooked meal. Last weekend, I was speaking about this with a friend and we agreed that we are all hungry for authentic, real relationships--the kind that are fostered over a community table with eye-contact, an absence of electronic tethering devices, a plate of good food and a little wine. I'd like to think that The Voluptuous Table is a place that makes this possible.

Our dinner menu for April is brought to you by coconut, that amazing hairy round thing that has had a few disparaging things said about it, such as "Falling coconuts kill about 150 people every year--10 times the amount of people killed by sharks." Now, can you find a reference for this claim, or any evidence to back this up? Nope. But it's been said. What we do know: coconuts most likely originated in New Guinea; coconut oil was the world's leading vegetable oil until soybean oil overtook it in the 1960s; coconuts are only grown successfully in the US in only two states (Hawaii and southern Florida); and JFK kept a coconut husk on his desk (Google that one). Coconut has also been pronounced as having several health benefits, and it has been pronounced a dietary evil. I leave it to you to decide. I just know that coconut tastes good and I like it. I like it a lot.

So how about a drink to get us started? I've come up with The Papa Coco Man, a rum-based mango/papaya/coconut cream cocktail that's refreshing and bright in the glass. Not too sweet, this cocktail pairs well with Thai Red Coconut Curry Popcorn, showered with a house-made Thai seasoning that's addictive. Crunch, munch and sip...and enjoy meeting your fellow dinner guests, perform your important and necessary wine rituals, stroll our beautiful gardens, or just do your best couch zombie impression while I finish up last-minute prep in the kitchen.

We're serving you a family-style Green Papaya and Grapefruit Salad with Coconut-Lime Cilantro Dressing. This salad is cool, crunchy and has lots of fresh, bright flavors. A little toasted unsweetened coconut adds nutty and complex notes. Then we'll be serving the main meal buffet-style. You'll have three dishes to choose from, mix or match as you wish: tangy and succulent Filipino Chicken Adobo, slow-simmered in coconut milk, soy sauce, garlic and vinegar; a fragrant Indonesian slow-cooked dish called Beef Rendang, simmered with plenty of shallots, garlic, ginger, galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves (grown in our garden!) and creamy coconut milk; and for the vegetarians, a luscious Cauliflower Curry cooked in coconut oil that brings a flavor profile from south India--garam masala, ginger, tumeric, onion, tomato, garlic and just a little kick from chiles--a rich-tasting and satisfying way to eat your veggies. All of these dishes are accompanied by steamed basmati rice that has been cooked with coconut milk.

What to drink with dinner? There are many ways to go here--I'd stick with light and bright: an off-dry Riesling, a zippy New Zealand Sauv Blanc, a Provence-style rosé. If you drink red and only red--stay with a light, not too oaky Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo or perhaps a Garnacha. For the beer drinkers, an IPA or light lager should do nicely.

For dessert, we're serving a moist Coconut Tres Leches Cake, rich, milky and definitely coco-nutty. There's even a little lime in the coconut, but you won't need to call the doctor. You Harry Nilsson fans get me? You can have a bottomless cup of Community Coffee, your own personal pot of hot tea, and you can even ask us for an after dinner drink (I've been busy infusing and decanting). Sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the evening with your friends. We encourage you to make yourselves at home at The Voluptuous Table.

Everything mentioned above is yours for a suggested donation of $20 per person. Please RSVP to this email, or call us at 512- 55 EAT 44 before midnight on Thursday, April 26th. We look forward to seeing you soon, and of course, to making more memories with you around The Voluptuous Table.
