Please join us Wednesday, April 18th, any time between 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Marc Hochar, owner of Chateau Musar, to our wine bar. Marc will present a truly special flight of exceptional wines beginning with the 2009, 2001, 2000 and 1998 vintages of the Chateau Musar Rouge followed by the 2007 Chateau Musar Blanc.
French in origin, the Hochar family arrived in Lebanon in the 12th century and settled in the Bekka Valley, about 30 kilometers southeast of modern day Beirut. Gaston Hochar planted vineyards in 1930 and established a winemaking legend that his son Serge expanded upon, bringing Chateau Musar much deserved international notoriety. Sadly, Serge passed away in 2014, and his sons, Marc and Gaston are now at the helm, continuing the proud legacy started by their grandfather. The Bekka Valley is further south than any part of Spain or Italy, however the Musar vineyards are situated at about 1,000 feet above sea level; at that altitude, colder nights and frequent snow in the winter months help to cool down the vines after hot days, preserving acidity in the grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan make up the red grapes while Obaideh and Merwah, two ancient Lebanese grape varieties, represent the main white grapes planted in Chateau Musar’s certified organic vineyards. Each varietal is vinified separately, blended together, bottled three years after harvest and aged an additional four years in bottle before release. The finished wines are a uniquely beautiful thing: Bordeaux style blends that express their terroir with character, finesse and stunning purity.
Chateau Musar wines are revered the world over and are best enjoyed in a flight environment like this in order to understand how the individual variations of each vintage tell a different and fascinating story about this very important wine estate.
