ABOUT JUSTIN WINEMAKER, SCOTT SHIRLEY
Scott Shirley joined JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery in March 2012. After making wine in Napa Valley for 13 vintages, he was excited to learn the nuances of new vineyard sites in the Paso Robles appellation. While Shirley has worked with many varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon is the medium closest to his heart. He trained his palate on Bordeaux blends at Opus One, where he was the enologist for six years. He then joined the Hess Collection as winemaker for nearly seven years, where his experience with Bordeaux varieties expanded to also include white wines and Rhone varieties.
With a degree in Biochemistry from UC Davis, Shirley enjoys the artistry of creating a blend that captures the expression of a certain variety during a particular set of growing conditions. There are challenges every year, but he looks forward to each new vintage bringing the opportunity to play with all of these variables, in order to fashion wines of compelling complexity and balance. He uses Cabernet Sauvignon in broad brushstrokes and then softens or amplifies the edges with blenders. Nearly every finished wine of Shirley’s is an exciting blend, whether of clones, varieties, barrel types or vineyard sites.
