Please join us Wednesday March 21st, anytime between 4:30 and 7:30 pm when we welcome Bettina Sichel, owner of Laurel Glen Vineyard, to our wine bar. Bettina will present a truly special flight featuring four vintages of the Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from 2013, 2008, 1998 and 1987, along with the Old Vine Rosella Rosé which is half Cabernet Sauvignon and half a fascinating field blend from the original three rows of vines planted in the 1880s.

The modern day Laurel Glen Vineyard was founded in 1977 by Patrick Campbell when he purchased a small 3 acre plot of Cabernet Sauvignon vines on top of Sonoma Mountain. He released his first Laurel Glen Estate Cabernet with the 1981 vintage and slowly added more vines over time, expanding to a total of 14 acres under vine. The vineyard is comprised of nine different blocks, including that small parcel from the 1880s, planted on sandy, red volcanic soil at an elevation of 1,000 feet. Throughout his 30 years at the helm, Patrick established Laurel Glen as one of California’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon producers, admired especially for the structure and longevity of its wines. By 2011, he was ready to hand the reins over and sold the estate to Bettina Sichel, of the fifth generation Sichel wine family from France and Germany.

Proprietors of many prestigious estates in Europe, the Sichels are known as one of the most important families in the wine world. Bettina’s father, Peter Max Sichel, was responsible for the overwhelming success of Blue Nun, the Riesling blend from Germany that took America by storm in the 1980s. Bettina isn’t riding on her Dad’s coattails, however, as she came to LaurelGlen with her own proven success in wine. Her career working for some of Napa’s finest wineries is most noted for the decade she spent at Quintessa, launching the brand, developing a national distribution network and elevating it into one of the world’s premiere estates. One of the first things she did when she arrived at Laurel Glen was convert all the vineyards to certified organic farming. She then hired David Ramey as the consulting winemaker and Randall Watkins as the winemaker. Needless to say, under Bettina’s superb stewardship, Laurel Glen has and will continue to produce some of our state’s finest wines.

Bettina also happens to be a total delight and a dear friend of Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet one of the most accomplished women in the wine industry and experience some extraordinary wines.
