Even if you think you don’t know anything about Italian wine, you’ve heard of Chianti. It’s the most widely-known and (today at least) well-respected Italian wine around the world. Thirty years ago, Chianti’s reputation was something different. In the 1930’s, the rules of Chianti were loosened to the point that people thought of it as cheap and pointless, but in the 1980’s, winemakers changed the rules back and restored this great wine to its traditional standards.
Chianti really hits the trifecta: it’s a place in Tuscany, a great wine from Tuscany, and an ideal of what Italian wine should be. This 2-hour tasting class will explore the whole range of Chianti, from simple and friendly Sangiovese blends to the revered and intensely flavored Chianti Classico. You’ll taste wines from all over the Chianti region as we get deep into the personalities and differences between the sub-regions like Chianti Rufina versus Chianti Colli Senesi (from the hills of Siena). Even though they’re not technically Chianti, we’ll get into the Supertuscan category too, because in some ways, Supertuscans represent the future of Chianti.
