Food     Sit Down Dinner     Wine

Last Thursday's Justin wines and Lamb Chops special sold out so we're repeating it this Thursday to give everyone who couldn't get in another chance to try this popular special and wines.  The original email announcement with all the particulars is copied below.  Hope to see you here!

If you missed the Justin winemaker dinner here a couple months ago, please join us (21 and up only, please) this Thursday anytime from 5:30 on for an opportunity to sample three Justin wines paired with a lamb chops special.  We're starting with their Sauvignon Blanc followed by their Cabernet Sauvignon and their iconic "Isosceles" Bordeaux Blend.  The flight of all three wines is a ridiculously low sixteen bucks.  Wine notes and bottle prices are at the end of this announcement if you're interested.

In addition to the regular twenty-six buck 3-course prix fixe bistro menu (which includes vegetarian options), we're also featuring a delicious herb rubbed lamb chops special that pairs with the wines. Here's the menu special line-up:

1st Course
Crimson Beet Tartar | Citrus Scented Goat Cheese | Blood Orange Reduction
(to enjoy with the Sauvignon Blanc)

2nd Course
Herb Rubbed Lamb Chops | Toasted Garlic Oil | Savory Bread Pudding
(to enjoy with the Cabernet and "Isoceles")

3rd Course
Dark Chocolate Ganache | Short Bread Crust | Candied Hazelnut
(to enjoy by itself or with our Moscato d'Asti)

Here's the wine line-up:

SO YOU DON'T LIKE THE DINNER SPECIAL, EH?

LOCATION & PHONE
Wine Vault & Bistro is located in the heart of San Diego between Little Italy and Old Town at 3731-A India Street on the upstairs terrace.  Follow the black handrail up the stairs from the sidewalk to our front door.  Our phone number is (619) 295-3939.

PARKING ~ FREE & PAID
Valet parking is available for $8.00.  The drop-off point is two doors south of our entrance in front of Shakespeare Pub at the corner of India and Winder.  On-street parking is also usually available within a 3-block radius.  Remember that it’s OK to park in yellow commercial zones after 6:00 and that meters are also free after 6:00.  You can also park in the lot behind Shakespeare Pub two doors down, but do not park in El Indio's lot unless you want your car towed!  If you can’t find parking next to the restaurant, there’s always LOTS OF PARKING on San Diego Avenue and the adjacent side streets just past the Chevron station across Washington Street.  So please don't drive yourself crazy endlessly going around in circles waiting to pounce on that perfect spot when there's TONS OF PARKING less than three blocks away!

WINE NOTES & BOTTLE PRICES
2016 Justin Sauvignon Blanc ~ $14
(Central Coast)  Very bright, light straw with silver highlights.  Fresh lemon, white peach, guava, pineapple, white flower and herbal notes, and a little white pepper.  Dry, refreshing throughout, with lemon, green apple, peach and tropical fruit on the entry leading to a crisp, textured mid-palate showing chamomile flower, subtle green herbs and mineral notes.  The finish is clean, bright and textured with lingering citrus and herbal character.  A perfect refreshing and crisp aperitif wine particularly in the summer months, it will pair beautifully with an apple and goat cheese salad, fresh oysters, or fish tacos with a squeeze of lime.

2015 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon ~ $23
(Paso Robles) Winemakers Notes:  Dark purple ruby core, slightly lighter at the rim showing light staining on the glass.  Aromatic with bright ripe black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, baking spice, savory dried autumn leaves, subtle violet floral notes with a hint of caramelized barrel sweetness.  Dry, moderate plus bodied, with ripe red and black cherry, and blackcurrant fruit joined by vanilla and cinnamon spice notes on the entry.  The mid-palate is fresh with sustained ripe fruit, toasty oak notes and softly textured tannins.  The finish is moderately long with notes of cherry candy and blackcurrant fruit matched with subtle classic Cabernet savory elements.  A great all-around choice for a wide range of food pairings from a simple cheese and charcuterie plate or a burger to vegetable lasagna, or even a prime rib. If you are looking for a quality, all-purpose red wine, this is it!

2014 Justin "Isosceles" Left Bank Bordeaux Blend ~ $72
(Paso Robles) Winemaker Notes: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc + 12% Merlot.  Bright, dense ruby purple core lightening toward the rim with thick, slow, moderately stained tears.  Intense aromas of ripe black cherry, black currant, vanilla, cinnamon and black licorice with dried herbs, cocoa, violets and toasted oak.  Dry, full-bodied and very complex with rich ripe black fruit and baking spice on the entry, with anise, purple flowers and chocolate on the mid-palate, joined by emerging chewy tannins into the fresh, balanced finish, which is very long with sustained fruit and layers of evolving sweet spice.  The palate is very open right now for such a cellar-worthy wine, and is an outstanding pairing with a classic prime rib or barbecue brisket.  After a few years it will be perfect with more complex dishes like a ragout of veal or lamb served with fresh pasta.
