Raventós i Blanc is a winery with one of the longest documented winegrowing traditions in the world. The family farm where our wines are now produced has belonged to the Raventós family since 1497. Five centuries working 90 hectares of vines and forest, a dynasty closely associated with the land from one generation to the next. Today, Pepe Raventós, who represents the twenty-first generation of the family, farms 44 plots using biodynamic winegrowing methods and is committed to maintaining the estate of vines, wood and lake as a complete entity. Raventós i Blanc is faithful to tradition and upholds the relationship between man and nature at the very core of its production philosophy.
"An intriguing rosé that conceals the soul of a white wine in its purity and transparence. A splash of Monastrell imparts a special complexity and elegance to Raventós cuvée de Nit, though the classic mineral freshness of this revered Cava house is untouched. The history of the Marqués de Murrieta winery is inextricably intertwined with the history of Rioja wine. The winery’s founder, the Marqués de Murrieta, imported production techniques into Spain from Bordeaux. In 1852 he produced his first wine in Logroño, moving into the Ygay Estate in the late 1870s. Located at the heart of La Rioja, the estate is home to Ygay Castle, headquarters of the Marqués de Murrieta wineries. The castle is surrounded by 300 hectares of vineyards.
The rare white Castillo Ygay is considered one of the greatest white wines ever produced in Spain, and the 1986 scored 100pts from Robert Parker. This is the first time such an important accolade is given to a white wine in Spain. The Ygay Reserva Especial Blanco derives its grapes from the Pago Capellania vineyard planted in 1945 on the highest area of the Finca Ygay Rioja Alta.
 
Remirez de Ganuza 2011 Trasnocho
 
Founded in 1989 by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, the estate is located in the village of Samaniego, at the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. Fernando, previously the largest vineyard broker in the region, now owns 104 hectares of vineyards spread across more than 100 plots in the Rioja Alavesa, where the average vine age is 60 years old. Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza’s quest for perfection is reflected in his very strict selection procedures and pioneering winemaking techniques
Trasnocho is an excellent wine with a strong fruity expression, using Tempranillo Graciano, Viura and Malvasía grapes. The grapes come from old vineyards which are on average 60 years old. Being the most modern wine produced by the winery, produced using totally innovative methods. The winery uses a system using a PVC water bag to press the skins gently and allow them to drain overnight. This releases 70% of the wine contained in the skins themselves. It is a simple yet effective technique, ‘that prevents any friction between the skins and therefore oxidation of the wine’. Fermentation then takes place in small stainless steel tanks and French oak vats. Finally, Trasnocho is aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels.
 
 
Sierra Cantabria 2014 Finca El Bosque $125.00
 
Sierra Cantabria is a leading Spanish wine producer known for its Tempranillo based range from Rioja and Toro. The company was founded by the Eguren family in 1870, and was previously known as Bodegas Eguren. Fourth generation Marcus Eguren is regarded as one of the country's leading winemakers. The company is made up of several different bodegas with associated vineyards. The Sierra Cantabria winery is in the heart of the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta and makes a range of classic Rioja wines from 19 vineyard sites totaling 65 hectares (160 acres).
El Bosque is a single variety Tempranillo. The grapes are grown in Finca El Bosque, a small 1.5 hectare estate with old vines more than 40 years old, grown on clayey-limestone soils with gravel and rocks on the surface. The area is sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria, with a mixture between Atlantic and Mediterranean climates with mild winters and summers and a large temperature difference between day and night: ideal conditions for ripening grapes. El Bosque is made using the traditional method. Production begins with pre-fermentative maceration at a cold temperature of 8ºC for 3 days. Fermentation takes place in French oak vats at a controlled temperature of 28ºC with 2 grape treading daily for the first 8 fermentation days and once daily during the remaining 5 days. Ageing is carried out for 18 months in new central European and French Bordeaux barrels, with racking every 4 months. A great, complex and very expressive wine with a long life ahead of it.

The Eguren family fell in love with this land more than 15 years ago, seduced by its pre-phylloxera vines, deep roots vineyards meticulously chose to translate the minerality of the soils in powerful and elegant reds. And our love for Toro remains unchanged.
Founded in 2007 by the Eguren family, five wines are elaborated in the cellar: Romanico, Almirez, Victorino, Alabaster and Teso La Monja, the most exclusive project that takes the name of the winery. The deep roots of the old vine Tinta de Toro grape translate the pure minerality of the soil into powerful yet elegant red wines
95 PTS “I also had two vintages of Alabaster to taste, starting with the cooler 2013 Alabaster, a cuvée of 11.5 hectares of centenary, ungrafted, head-pruned vines in the 'pagos' Valdemiano, La Jara and Marinacea in the village of Toro. The yields were minuscule, nine hectoliters per hectare and the hand-destemmed grapes fermented in open top vats with foot treading and very soft pumping over for some ten days at 28 degrees Celsius. They use yeasts that have been selected from their own vineyards for the fermentation. The wine matured in new French oak barrels for 18 months with rackings every four months. There is a plus of finesse and harmony here, of concentration and power too, but the price difference with the Victorino is hard to justify. There's some creaminess, even though the oak feels quite nicely integrated, especially considering the barrels are all new, but the juice is so intense and concentrated that can take that regime. The tannins are very fine, and feel a little more integrated with the glossy fruit. The extra length of the vegetative cycle that year surely brought that sensation of 'slow cooking' to achieve that perfect ripeness. Give it a little more time in bottle and this should improve and finish integrating all its components in an even way. 4,000 bottles produced.” – Robert Parker
 
Campo de Borja
 
Bodegas Alto Moncayo 2013 Aquilon $105.00
 
Bodega Alto Moncayo is a Spanish winery in Campo de Borja, known for exclusively making wines from the grape Garnacho. It was founded in 2002 as a partnership between Andalucía producer Jorge Ordóñez, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, and Bodegas Borsao, one of the largest and most influential producers in the Campo de Borja appellation. Alto Moncayo makes three wines, all from old-vine Garnacha of varying ages. The oldest vines are as much as 100 years old and are used in the Aquilon cuvée, with slightly younger average ages in the vines harvested for the Alto Moncayo and the Veraton expressions.
93 PTS “Smoky, roasted aromas of hickory and blackberry are patented for this label: all Alto Moncayo top-end bottlings open like this. In the mouth, this is direct, full bodied and high in energy. The flavors match the nose, meaning this tastes like dark berry fruits mixed with smoky oak and char, while the finish turns chocolaty, with pepper, wild berry, spice notes and heat. Ribera del Duero
 
Vega Sicilia 2004 Unico $335.00
 
Vega Sicilia is widely regarded as the greatest wine producer in Spain. The estate in Ribera del Duero is known for its dense, complex red wines made principally from the Tempranillo grape variety. Its top wine, Unico, is one of Spain's most expensive and sought-after wines. The Vega Sicilia estate covers around 1000 hectares (2470 acres) of which around 210ha (520 acres) is under vine. It has been in operation since 1864, long before the development of the appellation in which it resides, and the current wine styles date from the 1910s. Quality has become more consistent since the current owners, the Alvarez family, took over in 1982. Vega Sicilia makes three cuvées: Unico is the flagship, and the Reserva Especial is a blend of several of the best vintages. Traditionally they would be aged for 10 years or more before release, although this has been reduced in recent vintages. The junior wine, Valbuena, is made from younger vines, and is released after five years in American oak.
97 PTS “The 2004 Unico is truly spectacular, in line with the 1970 and 1994. It’s a blend of 87% Tempranillo and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. Unico has a unique long aging, in the case of the 2004, 15 months in 20,000-liter vats, 25 month in new barrels, 17 months in used barrels and a further 26 months in the big oak vats. It has complex notes of tobacco, cedar wood and blackberries, and shows very good balance between power and elegance as well as perfect ripeness. It has a similar profile to the 1994, but there’s ten years difference in experience and technical knowledge. There is nuance; there is detail, filigree, balance, harmony and complexity. There is a fine texture. In short, it is a great, world-class wine, a superb vintage for Unico. 87,500 bottles, 2,229 magnums, 150 double magnums and 5 Imperials were filled with this extraordinary wine. This is approachable now, but it’s a shame to drink so soon. It will age for a very long time, as it has the balance and harmony to do so, and it will develop more complexity with time. Domino de Pingus 2011 $845.00
 
Dominio de Pingus is a small producer in the Ribera del Duero region in Spain. First made in 1995, it immediately developed a cult status following rave reviews from Robert Parker in the Wine Advocate, and is now regarded as one of the greatest wines made in Spain, hotly sought-after and priced accordingly. The Tempranillo based wine is known for its density, concentrated black fruit and mineral backbone.
95 PTS “As with all the 2011s, the 2011 Pingus is riper, with never-seen-before alcohol levels (15.5%), but the wine feels extremely balanced. As usual, the highly-selected grapes were fermented in 2,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and aged for 22 months in second-and third-fill barrels. It is ripe and exuberant, with notes of violets, spices (curry!), smoky peat and umami-like meat-broth aromas. The palate is full-bodied, glyceric with sophisticated tannins, but plenty of them, so they need to calm down a little. I believe there will be a lot of people who will really love this 2011, it's showy and exuberant. 6,000 bottles produced. Drink 2016-2020.” – Robert Parker
