Pennsylvania Wine Excellence XVI by Averill Shepps
That’s 16 everyone! The PWS judging and tasting of fine Pennsylvania wines will take place for the sixteenth time. The judging takes place in November, while the tasting itself, at which we present the top scoring 10 wines and also honor those in the 11-20 category of scores, will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Harrisburg Hilton.
When you consider that last year we had 91 entries to judge, those top 20 wines have risen to the top against plenty of competition. The highlight of the afternoon will be the awarding of our beautiful plaque to the top scoring wine and a framed certificate to the top scoring wine of the other category. If the winner is white wine, the certificate goes to a red wine; If the winner is red wine, a white wine will be the certificate recipient.
But why should you attend this tasting? You will have the chance to try our best Pennsylvania wines and realize once again that they are getting better and better. I read recently that we have over 200 vineyards in Pennsylvania. I recall not too many years ago when we were surprised to have reached the 100 mark. The wineries submit their best examples to our competition, and we further winnow that down by our judging. I know we have a loyal following of attendees who enjoy coming each year to learn first hand which wines have made it to the top. Join them!
