Pennsylvania Wine Excellence XVI by Averill Shepps
The PWS awards event is now sixteen years old. The growth of the wine industry in Pennsylvania has been phenomenal during those years, and the quality of the wines has grown right along with it. Every year they get better; every year when the judging panel meets to score the entries, they are excited by just how good the wines have become. We can also be proud of our part in it, having started this effort with a commitment to encourage the wineries to make wines that we like to drink by giving them recognition for their best efforts.
This year we had 89 entries from 22 wineries. There were several new ones as well as some of our old friends who have been part of this effort for years, some from the beginning. We will be presenting the top ten scoring wines at our annual Awards tasting on SUNDAY, January 28, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg. After you taste these wines and hear from the winemakers who attend to present their wines and talk about conditions in the vineyards that year and challenges they met in making the wines, we will announce our winner of our beautiful award to the top scoring wine of the year. We will also present a framed certificate to the top scoring wine of the opposite color. If the winner is red, it will go to a white; if the winner is white, it will go to a red. We will have 13 other top scoring wines that you may sample at the end of the tasting. If you are interested in learning more about Pennsylvania wines and wineries, if you want to know where you should go to taste and purchase more of your favorites, you must attend this event.
