 Portugal and Spain 

Chef Cynthia Bloebaum, a WSET certified wine instructor and professional chef offers a unique exploration of Iberian wine, food and culture. The trip specializes in the wine regions of Northern Portugal and Northwestern Spain.

The trip features daily winery visits with private tastings, exploration of local food markets and products, plus museum or historical visits whenever possible. Chef Cynthia offers both a 7 day trip and a 10 day trip, depending on your availability. 

 The fee of $3600 per person for the 10 days includes transportation to and from the Porto airport, all ground transportation plus driver; lodging, all breakfasts and lunches, any dinners cooked by Chef Cynthia at the rental homes, local guides, and all winery tasting fees. If a shorter 7 day trip is necessary for you, the fee for that is $3000.00 per person.

Any dinners at restaurants are self paid.

 Chef Cynthia can accommodate a payment plan with you if needed.

A 40% deposit is needed in order to book the trip, due by September 15, with the final amount due the week of the trip. Chef Cynthia suggests that everyone get trip insurance

Due to the distance between the wine regions and the desire to cut down on daily car trips to our destinations, the group will stay in 3 different spacious vacation homes during the week.  

The wineries were chosen due to Chef Cynthia’s prior knowledge of them through her classes, restaurant work and contacts in the wine world. She will help you discover the world of Portuguese and Spanish wines, cuisines, culture and history.

Saturday 11/11/17

Note: the timing for this date depends on everyone’s arrival.

Arrive in Porto, ground transport to rental home, a luxury apartment in the city.  The first stop will be at the Wines of Portugal tasting room; our dinner will be at a casual neighborhood restaurant.

Sunday 11/12

Breakfast at rental home, then exploration of the Mercado Bom Sucesso after 10:00 am and lunch there. From there we’ll go to Vila Nova de Gaia the home of Port production.  Tentatively we’re scheduled at Espaco Porto Cruz- 5 wines with 5 cheeses tasting

Casual dinner at the vacation home.

 Monday 11/13 

Breakfast at the rental home, then a trip to the larger Bolhão Market and a casual lunch there. 

Afternoon TBD. depending on interest and availability- the Port Museum?

a walk through the Ribeira?

6:00 pm Food tour of Porto with a local guide; includes dinner and more wines.

Tuesday 11/14: Leave Porto and head to the Douro, where we’ll stay in another home near Lamego.

Thursday 11/16

We will drive 1.5 hours to Ponteareas over the Spanish border to Rias Baixas and our final home in a modernized farmhouse in the country outside Ponteareas.

Dinner at a Ponteareas restaurant, or at home depending on our mood

Friday: 11/17 Sober (the town) in the Ribeira Sacra

We’ll discover the white grapes Godello, Alvariño and Treixadura, then move to the red grapes Mencia and Alvarello for our morning tasting at Adega Alquiero. We’ll lunch at the winery restaurant, then go to a wine and liqueur tasting at Adegas Moure/Abadia da Cova.

 Saturday 11/18

NOTE; IF YOU CAN ONLY GET 1 WEEK OFF, THE 1.5 HOUR TRANSPORT  TO PORTO WILL BE ARRANGED FOR YOU.

Otherwise,this day will be spent in Vigo, a lovely city near the coast- we’ll have a local guide to take us to the market, we’ll sample cheeses, smoked fishes; go on the route of oysters, and eat at selected tapas bars. 

Our late dinner will be at the upscale local restaurant A Xarela Ponteareas, self paid

 

Sunday 11/19

This day can be spent traveling to Santiago de Compostela or a jaunt to Pontevedra which has museums and a big lunch at a restaurant. Our itinerary will depend on whether the group prefers a cultural or an epicurean experience.

 Monday 11/20

This will be one of our big days of Albariño- we’ll go to Cambados to visit Martin Codax in the morning. We’ll lunch in Cambados, then head to Bodegas Vilhariño - Cambados for a tasting.  Our final stop for the day will be at Pazo de Barrantes, owned by Marques de Murrieta.

Tuesday 11/21

We return to Porto, Chef Cynthia will get everyone to their flights in plenty of time.
