The Mediterranean Sea, one of the world's most important (and beautiful) bodies of water. People and goods have crossed its waters for millennia, exchanging money, ideas, technology, and culture. The same can also be said of grapevines, and winemaking techniques. Without this exchange, and the resulting experimentation, many of today's wines would not exist. But we humans like to fiddle, to test new methods and see what happens, and as this class will show, we're the better for it.
We'll taste wines from Mallorca, Sardinia, Sicily, and more (Corsica!). We'll explore myriad grape varieties, some indigenous, some transplants. But above all, we'll sample bottles with inimitable character, wines that speak of place, and leave you thinking, "Wow, this is different, this is unique (and I like it)".
Indeed, many of the wines featured will be from islands. Owing to the surrounding waters, islands often have cool night time temperatures, which helps retain acidity, while if the latitude is right, they also receive plenty of sun to ripen and develop flavors, be they fruit, mineral, or other.
Alas, while the best island wines all benefit from the dichotomy of warm days & cool nights, much diversity can be found amongst them. We'll taste whites and reds, maybe a rosé as well, some delicate, others rich and heady. We hope you'll join us on this exploration of the sea.
As always, a smorgasbord of the world's best cheeses, charcuterie, and breads will be served.
