Ideal 55 is most excited to welcome Dr. Laura Catena, fourth-generation vintner at Bodega Catena Zapata, to our next dinner on Wednesday, May 3rd at Spago Beverly Hills. This will be the first South American dinner we’ve hosted, and it’s shaping up to be a remarkable evening.
The Catenas are among an elite group of the world’s top winemaking families. In the tradition of their peers and sometime-partners such as Antinori, Conterno, Mondavi, and Rothschild, the Catena family has inspired and influenced all aspects of viticulture and enology in Argentina. They are true pioneers, almost single handedly responsible for increasing the reputation and quality of Argentine wines. Laura Catena has built upon her father, Nicolás Catena’s dedication to quality and innovation by combining her passion for wine with scientific research (in addition to her work as Managing Director at the winery, she is also an ER doctor in San Francisco!)
This dinner will provide us a unique opportunity to experience older Catena vintages alongside their current releases. The wines sourced for this dinner will include the stunning “White Stones” Chardonnay from the high-altitude Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, several remarkable vintages of the flagship Nicolas Catena Zapata, finishing up with the 2011 Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec from the Vino de Parcela series of wines. Many of these are highly allocated and limited wines, so it's quite rare to have them poured in one setting, particularly with such vintage depth! This is a very unique opportunity of which we are fortunate to be a part.
I might add that we are tremendously excited to return to the private dining room at Spago after a year spent exploring other great restaurants across town. It’s like coming home, as Spago is where the dinner series first started. Chef Tetsu and his team will work with us to create a special pairing menu, showcasing both food and wine in the way that the Spago team knows best.
As someone who has enjoyed these special wines, I invite you to share in the joy of discovering what top-notch Argentine winemaking is all about. Guests in attendance will have access to purchase many of the wines featured on the night of the event.
