If your cup of tea is big, bold and fortified wines than Southern Spain is a place that warrants your attention! To simplify things, divide Southern Spain into three main regions: La Mancha, Levante, and Andalucia.

La Mancha, which translates to “parched earth”, is one of Spain’s largest wine regions with approximately 1.2 million acres of vines planted. A wide variety of grapes are grown here but the number one varietal, making up the bulk of production and taking up twice as much land than any other varietal is Airen. This white wine grape is drought resistant. In a region like La Mancha where temperatures are extreme, hitting in the 100’s during the summer, this is vital for Airen and its ability to thrive. Even though Airen makes the bulk of production in La Mancha it is a lesser known varietal than the grapes that make up the reds and roses of the region which are more widely recognized.

While La Mancha has an extreme climate, it is Levante that has the most severe and hottest conditions compared with any wine regions that are up against the Mediterranean. The best way to describe Levante wines is “Mediterranean”. Because of the weather, most of the grape varietals are predominantly tough, thick-skinned varieties. Examples of these grapes would be Syrah, Mourvedre, Tempranillo, and Merlot. These wines usually produce wines that are full-bodied and well-balanced.

Lastly, but not the least, there is Andalucia. It is here that people will find their sweet and fortified wines. One of Andalucia’s most famous DOs is Jerez. Jerez is best known for being the world capital of sherry wine. Sherry is a fortified wine made primarily with the Palomino grape. So if you are looking for a nice glass of sherry to savor head on over to Jerez!
