Wines of Mediterranean France with Michael Franz
2 hours • $85
Few places in the world can rival the fame and romance associated with the French Riviera and the Mediterranean coast of France, but the wines from this swath of the country are still not as well known as they deserve to be. Yes, rosés from Provence and reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Côtes du Rhône are widely appreciated. However, Provence also makes marvelous reds and whites, and the southern Rhône is phenomenally complex, incorporating 95 distinct villages, 18 villages that can attach their names to Côtes du Rhône bottlings, and 16 separate crus such as Gigondas and Vacqueras. Moving westward, marvelous wines are made in many different styles in Languedoc and Roussillon. This class will consider growing conditions and historical backgrounds while surveying a broad set of benchmark wines from across southern coast.
