Wine OR Wine & Food
Bodegas Muga has been a family winery in Rioja since 1932 and it is one of the region's impeccable sources of fine wine. In the town of Haro in Rioja Alta, the winery is located in the historic Barrio de La Estación (railway station district), where R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, CVNE and La Rioja Alta are neighbors. Typical of Rioja's best bodegas these days, winemaker Jorge Muga is an exceptional wine grower and his viticulture team takes meticulous care of some of the best vineyards in Rioja Alta. The wines in this tasting represent an array of Muga's modern to very traditional wine styles, including: top wine Aro 2000 (debut vintage), Aro 2004 and Aro 2005; the iconic modern Rioja Torre Muga 1991 (debut vintage), Torre Muga 2004 and Torre Muga 2005; the singular Prado Enea 1981, Prado Enea 1982, Prado Enea 1998, Prado Enea 2001 and Prado Enea 2004; and classic Rioja at its best, Muga Gran Reserva 1970, Muga Gran Reserva 1981 and Muga Gran Reserva 1982. Chris Fleming is a wine marketing consultant and freelance wine journalist whose work has been published in The Wine Spectator, The World of Fine Wine, The New York Times, The Robb Report and others. In 2008, he was Technical Advisor on a Rioja DVD produced for the Culinary Institute of America and in 2009 he began research for a book on Rioja.
