What is the WSET?

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) was founded in 1969 to provide high quality wine education classes  in wines and spirits for those already in or intending to join the trade, and enthusiastic consumers throughout the world. Since then, WSET has grown into the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education classes, with a suite of sought-after qualifications. In that time, it has grown to become the largest global provider of wine education classes, with over 25,000 examination candidates per annum, in 47 countries and 9 different languages.

Who is the Level 1 Foundation For?

Level 1 is ideal for those new to wine and who want to understand the basics.

The Level 1, wine education class is for those preparing for, or employees starting, their first job in wine.
For Wine consumers, looking for challenging wine classes, wanting to know more about the main grape varieties and food and wine matching

It may also be used for students on a course of wine classes leading to food and drink service or other hospitality-related qualifications.

The Foundation wine education class will introduce them, at a very basic level, to the main styles of wine available, wine storage and service and the matching of food and wine.

These wine classes aim to provide students with product and service information relevant to their place of employment or study. The qualification aims to provide the basic product knowledge and skills in the service of wines required to prepare a person with the knowledge to underpin the job skills and competences, for example, in positions in the sale and service of  wine in restaurants and bars, and for store and call-centre staff in wine retail or wholesale.
