A TASTE OF SICILY & BAROQUE TOWNS

This adventure takes you across the exotic island of Sicily from Palermo to the southeast baroque region of Modica and Siracusa. Experience the local specialties, a hands-on cooking class with a master of authentic Sicilian cuisine, visit markets and taste wines from the different regions. A Taste of Sicily is the perfect combination to taste your way across Sicily.

DAY 1  Palermo  Our week long adventure begins with a walking tour through the bustling streets of Palermo to the Vucciria market. Vibrant and lively, vendors sell their just picked produce, mounds of olives, cheeses, spices and fresh catches of the day and sample local street food specialties. Continue on to Palermo’s Catherdral, Quattro Canti, known as the “four corners”, Piazza Pretoria and it’s magnificent baroque sculpture filled fountain, and the Opera house and hilltop town of Monreale and its stunning Byzantine mosaic filled Duomo. Enjoy dinner at a local hot spot and explore the city. B, D

DAY 2  Modica  After breakfast, we’ll travel to the center of the island to legendary Anna Tasca’s cooking class. You will spend the afternoon in her century old villa preparing authentic Sicilian dishes along with the history that created them. Or if you prefer you can watch or walk the vineyards until lunch.  All products are from their farm, from the eggs and cheese, to garden vegetables and olive oil, to of course the vino! Take a nap or watch the landscape go by on your way to the baroque city of Modica. B, L

Day 3  Modica   Today you will enjoy a walking tour of Modica, it’s historical sites and lesser known local areas. Then stop for a private tourand tasting at world famous Bonajuto chocolate shop, whose methods date back to the Aztecs and Spaniards. Many chocolate treats spiked with spicy chili and cinnamon to the best traditional sweet ricotta filled cannoli’s. Visit Castello Donnafugata fpr guided tour and free time to walk and explore the gardens. The evening is yours to enjoy Modica’s rustic delicacies such as scacci and arrancini and local wine and cheeses. Day 4  Modica   After breakfast visit the baroque village of Ragusa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its caciocavallo and fresh ricotta cheeses. This afternoon enjoy a rustic lunch among the vineyards and olive groves at one of Sicily’s top wineries. It an organic winery producing local varietals like Cerasoula and Nero d’Avola and see the unique wine making process in amphoras (clay urns) dating back to ancient Rome.  B, L

Day 5  Siracusa   This morning continue on to Siracusa, Ortygia, known as, Citta Vecchia, the old city of Siracusa first inhabited by the Greeks. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this little island is filled with medieval and baroque monuments. Lunch at a local trattoria. This evening is free to explore the narrow streets, shops and restaurants or even take in a long standing traditional Sicilian performance at the puppet theatre. B, L

Day 6  Siracusa   Today our local guide will take us to the market, visit the Duomo and Santa Lucia piazza. On our walking tour we’ll visit a fewshops to sample local artisan cheeses and wines, visit one of  Siracusa’s best pasticceria’s creating traditional Sicilian cassata, cannoli, delicious almond cookies pasta di mandorle. Next, visit the Greek Amphitheater dating back to 5th century BC and the Ear of Dionysis, the cave possess amazing acoustical properties. Dinner is at one of Sicily’s best pizzeria’s. B, L, D

 DAY 7  Arrivederci!  We hope to see you again soon.

After breakfast, transfer to Catania Airport or if you are continuing on we are happy to assist with your travel plans. Additional days may be on to visit Taormina.
