Casual Atmosphere, Great Wines, Good Friends – January 6, 2011 -- The Deadly Zins

No, we are not talking about the inexpensive pink wines we find at grocery stores, we are talking about robust and hearty reds, perfect for a month like January.  Zinfandel is a red grape predominantly grown in the United States (but now finding cultish ventures in Australia, Italy, and even Mexico) which can attain dramatic ripening levels demonstrated in the high alcohol content of the wine.  Zinfandel has been a part of the California scene since about 1850 and became widely planted in that state by the end of the 19th century (with plenty of it getting uprooted during the mistake of prohibition) but it is originally from Croatia where it is known as Crljenak Kastelanski.  Part of the appeal of this grape is that it makes wines which can be warm and muscular, sometimes verging on the jammy side and other times they can be refined, elegant and surprisingly restrained (like some of the best Napa and Sonoma Zins).  We want to show a sampling of 5 Zinfandels from different regions within California with a wide range of styles.  These wines are also magnificent with hearty stews, robust soups, and saucy pastas and pizzas, plus the alcohol content can sure make one loopy quickly if not careful.  Please join us on the first Thursday of January to warm ourselves a bit with these fabulous wines.  Salud! -- Jorge
