Wine OR Wine & Food

Gain in depth knowledge of the gastronomy, terroir, varietals and wine-making styles of Uruguay. Still the underdog of South American wine sales in the U.S, Uruguay is home to a mere 300 wineries – compare that to 1200 in Rioja alone! The smallest country and wine producer of South America, Uruguay is a state of revolution, with 3rd and 4th generation wine-makers of family owned estates sweeping out the old styles and bringing a new wave of ingenious wines. Argentina saw this same revolution 20 years ago, and now produces some of the U.S’s favorite wines, will Uruguay be next? We certainly hope so, Barcelona has been a huge supporter for nearly 5 years now. This tasting will focus on the many styles of Uruguayan wines, namely their principle grape, the brooding, red Tannat.

The style of these wine courses is designed for the beginner looking to become a professional, or an enthusiast looking to gain more knowledge and wine tasting experience. No one is born with the ability to decipher particular aromas and flavors in wine – it can only come with lots of practice, and student of these wine courses will gain great training in palate development. We discuss topics beyond the typical “abc’s,” often focusing on how to describe and recommend unfamiliar wines and regions. Students of the wine class will gain experience in wine terminology, wine tasting and evaluation, wine-making techniques and styles, regions of the world, effects of climate and weather on vineyards, and over-all , interesting facts and knowledge that will certainly impress any listener.
