Experience renowned Spanish wine from the Rioja region without leaving Long Island! Lola, Chef/owner Michael Ginor’s restaurant in Great Neck, will host a Rioja wine and tapas dinner on Thursday, June 3 at 7pm. Special guest Sara Agos of Bodegas Riojanas will feature four of the winery’s premiere selections alongside a variety of signature tapas from Chef Michael Ginor.
Sara was born in Pamplona, Spain and grew up surrounded by vineyards in Viana (Navarra), a beautiful medieval town in the Rioja wine region. Her family has worked in the wine industry for centuries, and carrying on the tradition was always a dream for Sara. The vineyard’s seasons and the grapes and vines have left a lasting impression on her and she hopes to pass along the tradition and her love of wine to her children.
Prior to working in the export department in Bodegas Riojanas, Sara worked at Bodegas Roda and Vintae. She has been the Brand Manager for Bodegas Riojanas in the United States and Canada since November 2009.
Sara is eager to share her handpicked Rioja wine selections and discuss how they accompany Chef Michael Ginor’s tapas. The variety of tapas offered pair well with each selected wine and guests will see how the different wines bring out different flavors in each dish. The evening is sure to delight wine and food lovers with a sensation of flavors.
The wines will be paired with the following tapas (please note this is a partial list that will change with what is market fresh on June 3):
Saffron risotto with Scallops
Croquettes with Garlic Aioli
Octopus in smoked Paprika
Marinated Tuna Cubes
Hudson Valley Foie Gras with quince
Duck Prosciutto
Roast Garlic Prawns
Goat cheese stuffed pequillo peppers
Pan con Tomat
Seared Foie Gras with Pedro Ximenez Syrup
Bruchetta of monkfish liver mousse
Grilled Chorizo and Jicama salad
Herbed Potato Empanada with Pequillo pepper marmalade
Lamb sweetbreads with parsnip mousseline
The wine selections include:
Viña Albina White Semi-Sweet 2008: Comprised of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasía de Rioja, this wine is very personal and complex with a varietal aroma. Its secret resides in a perfect balance between its natural sugar content and acidity, resulting in much personality, charm and a discreet sweetness with an unforgettable fragrance.
Monte Real Crianza 2006: Made from 100% Tempranillo grapes, the Monte Real Crianza follows the style demanded by today’s consumers: more color, more fruit and more potency. In the mouth, its body and potency are perfectly offset by the smoothness and elegance typical of great Riojas.
Monte Real Reserva 2004: From the vineyards of Cenicero comes this delicious blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, and 5% Graciano grapes. The Monte Real Reserva is an intense cherry-red colour with a tawny rim. Clean, powerful aromas on the nose lead into a full bodied structure in the mouth. This wine is well-developed and mature.
Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998: It is the ideal time to drink this blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, and 5% Graciano. The Monte Real Gran Reserva is balanced with a sensual taste. You’ll notice a good body and balance between tannins and acidity in this exceptionally persistent wine.
