WINES FOR THIS SATURDAY:
We pushed forward by a week in order to taste some true gems we found this year that are perfect for Valentine's Day. A beautiful pink sparkling that fits right in that sweet tooth we know you have. It seems Pinot Gris has been the second most agreeable varietal to Tully's Tasters lately, so I went to one of my all time favorite Oregon wineries for their organic tier. A really pretty simple light red called "the heart" and labeled with a heart. A massive, bowl you over Petite Sirah - the most recent red grape of choice. Saving the best for last - a Chocolate Port from Rosenblum Cellars - one of the most respected names in Zinfandel in California.
We
are also featuring some chocolate truffles from a local producer that
uses a Maine winery - Winterport Winery - in the production of these
sinful chocolate balls. We're trying to offer them some exposure.
TENUTA SANTOME SANTHOMAS - $18 EACH, 2 for $17 EACH
Foam: fading gently.
Perlage: fine and persistent.
Colour: soft pink.
Nose: fresh and delicate fragrance, rich in fruit sensations, such as apple, peach, strawberries and raspberries with hints of roses and white flowers.
Palate: fine, subtle, elegant and pungent on the palate with balanced acidity, well structured with a fresh and dry aftertaste.
In the kitchen: An excellent aperitif for important occasions. It accompanies seafood salads, fish first courses, shellfish, as well as the famous spicy fish soups of the lower Adriatic coast. Very good with quiches, vegetable focaccias, soufflés in general, and baccalà alla vicentina, Vicenza-style dried stockfish. Really delicious with the finest Italian raw hams and lardo di colonnata, pork fat preserved in salt and herbs, served with hot toast.
KING ESTATE SIGNATURE PINOT GRIS - $16 EACH, 2 for $15 EACH

Growing Season:
2008 was a classic Oregon vintage. A cool spring started the vintage
off slowly, but warm summer weather allowed the grapes to catch up and
grow at a steady, even pace. Estate heat summation was typical, 1807
growing degree days vs. the average 1811. The summer saw below average
rain fall with only 6.75 inches between April and October, including a
minimal 1.5 inches that fell during the critical late-September/early-October pre-harvest period. As a result, fruit was clean, ripe and concentrated.
IL CUORE "The Heart" ROSSO CLASSICO - $12 EACH, 2 for $11 EACH
(Classic Red) is a unique blend of Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Charbono. The wine is an exuberant expression of berries, plums and ripe cherries. Sangiovese, delicate in color yet intense with flavor, is the nobel grape variety cultivated in the rugged foothills of Tuscany for over 2,000 years. Zinfandel adds a rich blackberry-raspberry quality. Charbono completes the trio with peppery, plummy flavors and deep color. The spicy flavors will enhance lamb, roasted herbed chicken, hearty pasta and Mediterranean-style grilled meats and vegetables.
"... a richly fruity, sweet, round, delicious quaffing wine with real character. There are copious quantities of berry fruit, along with spice and pepper in this supple-textured, pleasing mid-weight red." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
"A
crisp red with a spicy, leathery accent to the lightish cherry aromas
and flavors. A blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Zinfandel. 85 points." - Wine Spectator
Vintage: 2006 Alcohol%: 14.3%
Aging: 18 months in new and used American Oak
Tasting Notes: Massive aromas of black cherries, tar, lilac, nutmeg, and a slight minerality - along with humongous flavors of black pepper, cherries, dried herbs, and plums - leading to a ginormous finish of blackberries! Petite? Snort!
Vineyard Notes: 84% Petite Sirah from Tanner Vineyard, 16% Petite Sirah from the Frogstooth Vineyard
Food Pairing Notes: Steak and Eggs! Any grilled meat, even SPAM! or bacon... mmmm, bacon... and of course french toast and custard donuts... mmmm, donuts...
"A definite 2 thumbs up as El Jefe & Co. rock the house again !!! Decanted for 1 hour...intense aromas...very smooth... and dry... and a long lingering finish...I think the DUDE would like this one!" (2005 vintage) - NY Pete on Wine Library TV Forums
DE'SIRE'E CHOCOLATE DESSERT WINE - $19 EACH, 2 FOR $18 EACH
"It's dark ruby and purple, and the aroma is like creamy cherry chocolate pie. The taste is crazy. It's a candy bar in a bottle with a little alcohol. Pour it over some ice cream and have some fun.
Vineyards: Various vineyards throughout California
Composition: 58% Zinfandel, 20% Touriga Nacional, 18% Syrah, 4% Brandy
Alcohol: 16.5% Residual Sugar: 7.5% pH: 3.76 Total Acidity: 0.63g/100ml
Barrels: French & American Oak
Production: 3,125 cases Release Date: November 2007
Production Notes:
To produce this wine, a selection of fortified wines from different
regions and different vintages were evaluated. The blend that combined
the most intense and most chocolate characteristics was chosen. We have
special liquid chocolate syrup that is put together in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin for us that will coalesce with the blended wine to enhance
the flavors of chocolate, coconut and vanilla in the wine that is
already geared for being a great chocolate experience. The fortified
wines that make up this blend are Zinfandel, Touriga Nacional and
Syrah. These are wines that are kissing cousins in terms of flavor and
intensity. In addition they bring together both the new and the old
world with varietals that are famous for dessert wines.
What Is Fortification?
This is the process where a distilled spirit is added to a fermenting
wine to raise the alcohol level to a point (usually around 18% so that
the remaining yeast can’t survive) but they have a great going away
party. The resulting beverage is sweet with a high alcohol and is of
course a wonderful dessert wine.
WINE NEWS
As is quite "normal" for February - there's no real news. As I mentioned last month, the distributors are offering some crazy case pack price reductions, we have a list if you're interested. Just ask.
BEER NEWS
The most exciting thing that we have to talk about is a beer dinner we created with Jonathan's Restaurant in Ogunquit and Victory Brewing Company. BeerGirl and I will be your hostesses for a 5 course meal accompanied by 5 terrific brews from Victory. If you missed last week's email please check it out on our website. Victory Brewing Beer Dinner
We were also visited by the representative from Brew Dog in Scotland. BrewDog
We were seriously floored by the amazing array of Scotch barrell aged
stouts available from this fairly new company. Not cheap - but oh so
tasty and right in line with the other wood aged products that beer
geeks here are loving so much of late. We've been told that our
distributor ordered the products last week. We'll see........
