for a carefully, hand-picked selection of wines from four of the 9 appellations
that have recently been granted AOC status.
The Languedoc region produces more wine than any other region in France
and consists of more than a third of the entire country's vineyard
acreage.
You can get far more bang for your buck with the Languedoc wines than many others of similar quality, as this region produces a big portion of France's table wines, or "vins de tables," and most of France's country wines, or "vin de pays." It is an ideal destination for touring the French wine country, visiting vineyards for tastings, or simply enjoying a glass at a café.
Until recently, Languedoc-Roussillon was the only major winegrowing area
in France not to have its own regional appellation. This was put to an end late
last year when AOC Languedoc was officially launched, after more than a decade
in the works. The region's growers and winemakers hope the move will boost the
area's image and reputation.
"This new appellation, based upon the production criteria of AOC Coteaux du Languedoc, covers all the appellation growing zones in Languedoc-Roussillon, from Nîmes"-just west of the Rhône river-"down to the Eastern Pyrenees," explained Château Lascaux vintner Jean-Benoit Cavalier, currently president of the AOC Languedoc Winegrowers Syndicate.
