Wednesday (11/4/09) 6-8pm at Khourys on S. Durango
Thursday (11/5/09) 6-8pm at Khourys on S. Eastern
Kenneth Juhasz created the cult label Auteur, concentrating on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He first developed his winemaking talents in Oregon’s Willamette Valley working with veteran winemaker Ken Bernards. He also spent time in New Zealand helping to launch Hinton Estate. In 2002 he settled in Carneros as the winemaker to the Robert Stemmler label, The Donum Estate and Tuck Becktoffer’s Sempre wines.
The focus of Auteur is on cool microclimates in Oregon and California and vineyard-designate wines. Grapes are currently sourced from the Willamette Valley, Sonoma Coast, Los Carneros and Mendocino Ridge. Ken’s style will appeal to those who prefer bold and intense wines packed with fruit. Despite their big style, they retain elegant and balanced. Ken is considered to be one of the best Pinot and Chard winemakers in the country. Very low production! This is an excellent opportunity to taste these rare wines.
Auteur Wines 2007 Hyde Vineyard Carneros Napa Valley Chardonnay
The near perfect Hyde Chardonnay shows a remarkably crisp, refined, almost aristocratic side of California chardonnay. While reticent on the nose at first, hinting at tropical and citrus fruit, after few minutes in the glass, fruit comes gushing forth with white peach, lychee, pineapple and lemon. As these fade, the haunting aroma of hazelnut becomes apparent and is joined by an earthiness seldom found in California chardonnay. On the palate the cascade of fruit continues, constantly changing but finally coming to rest on exotic starfruit. The finish lingers with baked lemon and spice. While all the ripe fruit gives an impression of roundness, ample acidity keeps this wine fresh and coiled, suggesting not only long aging potential, but also making it a perfect refreshing spring wine in its youth. 120 cases made
Auteur Wines 2007 Ophelia Pinot Noir
Alluring mineral, dried herb, and pipe smoke aromas accentuate the briary wild berry and chocolate undertones. Beautiful integrated tannins melt into bright brambly black fruit lifted with elements of wet stone and deep lavender. Commanded by great acidity and structure, take time with this wine to enjoy its distinctiveness. 279 cases made
Auteur Wines 2007 Sonoma Stage Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Rich aromatics of cherry blossom and plum with high notes of anise and clove are supported by a dense core of chocolate dusted berries. The palate is intense with expressive acidity focused around lush blueberry compote and a black cherry center accented by floral tones. 247 cases made
Auteur Wines 2007 Shea Vineyard Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
The 2007 Shea betrays its origins in Oregon immediately by its deep red, nearly purple color. The nose is equally dark at first, with fresh peppercorn, blackberry, and currant. A second pass lifts these flavors with lavender, truffle, perfectly ripe raspberry, and the slightest hint of vanilla. The palate provides a perfect example of the duality we strive for in our wines. It is rich, with ripe black fruit and raspberry, but also vibrant, with cranberry and crushed flower petal. It is expansive, with a massive finish dominated by dark fruit and cola, but avoids becoming too heavy thanks to a mineral streak and refreshing acidity. All of these flavors together result in a wine that is complex and intriguing, as well as delicious. While we expect this wine to be tight on release, decanted and given some cellar time, it has all the ingredients to develop into a classic example of our Shea pinot noir. 313 cases made
