Celebration Dinners for the 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau
A new wine and four spectacular old one mark two Bistros’ dinner Every year, people around the globe celebrate France’s highly anticipated release of Beaujolais Nouveau. At the strike of midnight on the third Thursday of each November the young and light wine is delivered far and wide so that with great fanfare it can be sampled for hints of what its stored-away siblings might bring years later.
It is a tradition not to be overlooked in Houston as owners Jean-Philippe and Genevieve Guy turn their two popular bistros here over to the celebration, adding a wine dinner not to be missed. At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, Bistro Don Camillo, one of Houston’s first restaurants to feature the unique foods of Nice and the Riviera, and Bistro Provence will host very special five-course dinners beginning with the opening of the 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau. What follows will be the Rosenthal Selection Beaujolais Cru Dinner created around four spectacular wines selected by Jean-Philippe, including a hard-to-find white Beaujolais for which the entire production in 2008 was only a few thousand cases. The honorary guest for the night will be John Paine of Rosenthal Wine Merchants. Reservations are required at either restaurant. Cost for the dinner is $79 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Bistro Don Camillo, named for the fictional, post World War II Italian priest, is one of, if not the first, restaurant in Houston to offer the unique foods of Nice, Europe’s playground city in Southern France. The menu reflects the delicious blending of Italian and French cooking that produced a cuisine all its own. It is located at 6510 Del Monte just off South Voss. Reservations are required so call 713-782-3011. Bistro Provence, 13616 Memorial Drive, is an imaginative institution in West Houston. It’s cozy interior is highlighted by the blue and yellow colors of Provence, and its menu is full of the French country dishes for which the region is famed. Reservations are also. Call 713-827-8008.
