Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Wednesday, November 18th 4:00 to 6:00

We will be tasting new releases of Wines from Bethel Heights Vineyard, for inclusion on our list. Michelle Cove from Bethel Heights and Rafael Flores of Artisanal Cellars, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Two families established Bethel Heights Vineyard in 1977, in the Eola Hills northwest of Salem, Oregon. Twin brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their partners Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb. Ted and Pat were graduate students doing historical research in France when they discovered the joys of wine. Marilyn and Terry were practicing therapists in Seattle when they started drinking Burgundy and became wine enthusiasts. Reunited by their newfound interest in wine, in 1977 the two families, together with Pat's sister Barbara Dudley, bought 75 promising looking acres and started a new life. For the first thirty years Ted was responsible for the vineyards and Terry made the wine. Pat and Marilyn shared responsibility for marketing and business. The first vines were planted at Bethel Heights in 1977, and the backbone of their wine production still comes from their own-rooted Pinot noir vines that were planted 30 years ago. In 1999 Justice Vineyard was established adjacent to Bethel Heights as part of the estate. Together these vineyards comprise 70 acres, more than three-fourths planted to Pinot noir, with Chardonnay running a strong second and a minority commitment to Pinot blanc and Pinot gris. The original 50-acre Estate vineyard is planted on a south-facing hillside rising from 480 to 620 feet elevation, with shallow well-drained soils of volcanic origin (Jory/Nekiah soil series). The 20-acre Justice Vineyard sits lower on the hillside, with soils that show the transition between volcanic layers above and the older underlying marine sedimentary layers of the original ocean seabed.  The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread.  The wines featured will be:
Pinot Blanc, “Estate” 2008
Pinot Gris, 2008
Chardonnay, “Estate” 2007
Pinot Noir, “Eola-Amity Hills Cuvée” 2007
Pinot Noir, “Estate” 2007

A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $15.00 fee per person.
