Tasting Lineup

Domaine Hubert Clavelin "Brut-Comté" Cremant du Jura $20

Hubert Clavelin and his two sons have vineyards in the Côte du Jura, a small range of mountains about 30 miles to the east of the Côte D’Or in the province of the Franche-Comté. Within their holding they have a parcel of very high limestone soil that they have planted in Chardonnay and from this parcel they make their sparkling wine, Brut Comte. Their method is the same as champagne; the wine is fermented in the bottle and each bottle is hand-riddled. Domaine Hubert Clavelin "Brut-Comté" Cremant du Jura

The resulting wine is full and rich, with elegant flavors and aromas of toast, baked apples, lemon zest and honey. Drink now – 2011.

Chateau Mourgues du Grès Les Galets Dorés 2008 $17

This range is named after “Les Grès” a specific terroir of covered by “galet roulés”, or sandstones, coming from a glacial moraine that was deposited along the Rhône river. Consequently, Costières de Nîmes has a substantial layer of “grès” that superimposed on a subsoil of calcareous clay and limestone. The elegant white wine offering, the 2008 Les Galets Dores (nearly equal parts Grenache, Roussanne, Rolle, and tiny amounts of Marsanne and Clairette), offers notes of honeyed grapefruit and buttery citrus along with fresh acidity, medium body, plenty of flavor, and a dry, crisp finish. It should be drunk over the next year.

2007 Domaine Collotte Bourgogne Cuvée de Noble Souche $20
Value isn’t common in Burgundy, but Domaine Collotte offers (albeit limited amounts of) fine fruit-driven wines that are true expressions of the soils from which they originate. The vines that make up the incredible Bourgogne Rouge were planted in 1947, much of the Marsannay was planted over 50 years ago, and the Chambolle Musigny is a show-stopper.  Parker refers to him as one of the new stars of the Marsannay, and after tasting them you will know why. This wine offers ripe cherry and wild berry flavors, with mineral and firm tannins to match. Concentrated, this finishes on the tannic side. 125 cases imported.

Domaine Alary 'La Grange Daniel' Rouge 2006 $17

The Alary family has been growing wines in the Cairanne, Cotes du Rhone since 1692, this wines represents their 10 generation of wine making.  This wine is powerful in mouth, with firm and quite well-balanced tannins, the notes of ripe red fruits characteristic (prune, bilberry). It is rich in bouquet, very harmonious, with the notes of dry fruits and flowers, all in roundness.  Varietals used: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Counoise, Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.

Domaine Gardies Cotes-du-Roussilon-Villages "les Millieres" 2007 $20

Millières, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a bit of Mourvédre. This family estate has been run by son Jean since 1990, producing organic wines from hand- harvested grapes, fermented and aged in wood. This is a rich wine, suitable for hearty stews and complex flavors.

2006 La Bastide Blanche Bandol Cuvée Estagnol $35

100% Mourvèdre. Plush and rich, with dense flavors of dark cherry, fig, licorice and dark chocolate. The powerful finish lingers with notes of mocha, smoke and roast beef. 92 Wine Spectator. Best from 2010 through 2014. 150 cases imported.
