Wine OR Wine & Food

October 28 - Rioja with Lisa Granik MW (Master of Wine)

Lisa Granik MW (Master of Wine) and fine wine manager for Empire Merchants will help you demystify the language of Spain's classic wine region, Rioja. What exactly are the differences between a Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva? Learn the characteristics of Rioja Blanca. Taste traditional and modern styles and learn how to differentiate them. Discover the terroir of Rioja, and how the mountain ranges, rivers and soils contribute to the wines that are Rioja. Tonight's offerings include wines from Lopez de Heredia, Sonorio de P. Pecina, Palacios Remondo and more. A selection of Spanish cheeses and cured meats will highlight the food friendliness of Spain's classic wines.

According to Eric Asimov in a recent article, R. Lopez de Heredia "...is paradoxically a winery in the vanguard, its viticulture and winemaking a shining, visionary example for young, forward-thinking producers all over the world". Marques de Murrieta and Hermanos Pecina are other favorites and considered benchmarks for the region. The intricacies of when they make their Reservas and Gran Reservas, what and why they choose to blend, and other complexities are unveiled by our inimitable host.

November 11 - Monika Caha on Austria

Monika Caha, an importer of fine Austrian wines and a chef who splits her time between New York and Vienna, joins Maslow 6 for a special presentation on Austria and its wines and foods. Taste native Austrian grape varieties Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, and Zierfandler, and experience first-hand how food friendly the wines from these grapes can be. Discover the different regions of Austria and taste their regional specialties. Groovy Gruners and racy Rieslings from the Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal. Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt from Burgenland.

November 18 - Cognac and Armagnac with Nicolas Palazzi

The weather is getting cooler and our thoughts turn to relaxing in front of the fire with a warming glass of brandy, cognac, or armagnac. The owner of Nicolas Palazzi wines, and producer of artisanal Cognac, will lead us on a tasting of Cognac and Armagnac and explain the intricacies of the distillation process that turns wine into spirits, and creates stylistic variety. Discover how wines distilled on their lees give roundness and elegance, while those distilled without are more intense and fiery. Discover also how Cognac can pair with food, and how it acts as a digestif after the meal.

December 8 - Champagne with Mollie Battenhouse (DWS, Advanced Sommelier)

Kick off your holiday season with a seminar on Champagne. Our own Mollie Battenhouse will guide us through this special region. While perfect for the holidays and special occasions, they can be for everyday too, and they are, according to Mollie, the best wines for food and wine pairing. Discover how Champagne spans a range of styles, from bone dry, crisp, and elegant to robust, full-bodied, and toasty. We'll learn how Champagne is made and matured, and we'll explore the ways that the wine-making process and blending contribute to the overall style of Champagne. Taste wines from the big houses as well as individual growers and producers and discuss how they differ in terms of style, flavor, and market presence.

$100 each or $325 for all 4 seminars

All seminars 6:30 - 9:00 PM held at 211 West Broadway, New York, NY 10013
