Seven Hills Winery is located in the heart of Walla Walla, Washington. Though it has built its reputation quietly, Seven Hills is one of the region’s oldest and most respected wineries. Founder Casey McClellan has played an important role in both the viticultural and winemaking history of the community. As a fourth-generation farmer, Casey worked alongside his father in the early 1980s, planting Walla Walla Valley’s Seven Hills Vineyard—a site that has gained recognition as one of the Northwest’s grand cru properties. As a winemaker, Casey has guided Seven Hills Winery, creating wines that have emerged as benchmarks for excellence in the Northwest.

WINE

2008 Talcott Vineyard Viognier ~ $17.09  reg. $18.99

Talcott Vineyard is located on the Wahluke Slope of the Columbia Valley. Its deep silty soil structure allows for pure flavor development in the fruit, with expert canopy management protection the ripening fruit from the intense rays of the sun. Barrel fermentation accentuates the creamy sweetness on the palate, and fruit character is enhanced by avoiding a malo-lactic fermentation.  Showing a gold green color and a charming  nose of clementines, pine, and grilled peach with spicy oak notes.  Soft and viscous on the palate with a clean, long finish.

2006 Columbia Valley Tempranillo ~ $17.99  reg, $19.99

Our fourth bottling of the rare Spanish varietal, Tempranillo, which has only recently been grown in Washington's wine grape growing regions.  The grapes are sourced from two distinct sites: one, on a south-facing gravelly slope near Mattawa.  The other is a terrace of silt loam in the Walla Walla Valley.  Both are among the oldest plantings in the Northwest.  The fruit  was hand-picked under ideal weather conditions.  The Tempranillo exhibits a medium-bodied, ripe, accessible style.  It shows cherry fruit, with exotic hints of smoke, savory herb and rose petal notes.  Vanillin and subtle spice add complexity.  Sweet, bright fruit by mouth, with a clean finish, and mild, dry tannins.

2006 Walla Walla Valley Malbec ~ $26.99  reg, $29.99

100% Malbec, hand-selected fromWindrow, Minnick and McClellan Estate Vineyards, three hillside sites in the appellation under ideal conditions. Deep, purple-black color. Assertive scent of passion fruit and blueberry, with floral and spice notes. Medium weight body, with moderate tannin. Berry finish, slightly drying. Aged exclusively in fine Hungarian oaks for 18 months, about 35% new. The wine shows qualities that indicate at least three to four years of enjoyable cellar life.

2007 Ciel du Cheval Red Mountain Red Blend ~ $31.49 reg, $34.99

2007 gave us dramatically riper fruit, the product of accelerated August and early September ripening weather. The blend is again dominated by Cabernet, and rounded with a large portion of Merlot. We've increased the percentage of Petit Verdot to bolster the structure, color and savory component. Cabernet Franc lends grace notes and elegance to the palate. The color is strong purple, the nose evocative of ripe plum preserves, pepper, dried herb and sweet baking spice. The palate is laid on a solid tannic structure, but with softly balanced acidity, and black fruits of depth and persistence. I would say that this is a somewhat bigger, more forward style than is usual with our Ciel bottlings, and is truly reflective of the 2007 vintage conditions. I predict it to age well for 5-10 years from the vintage date.
