A bit about Oyikil Winery:

Oyikil [o-gee-keel] means "Condor" in Tehuelche´s Indian language.

From the mythical heights of the Andes, the silent flight of the Oyikil, keeps watch over the vineyards which bring forth a unique wine.   Soil, pure water, clean air, sunshine, mountains. The environment where the Oyikil soars over all that is known.

Vineyards are located in Uco Valley in the Andes Mountains. The place is called Vista Flores, and is 3445 feet above sea level.

The ground is permeable, sandy and deep inside there are stone layers.  Is an area with great amount of snow during the winter, this also helps the strength of the plant and the purity of the plant.  The vineyards orient from northwest to southeast, and this is important because the grapes obtain a great exhibition of the sun during the morning, but avoiding the strong sun of the afternoon.

The big changes in temperature (about 68°F between day and night) are really good for the development of the colors and tannins in red wines. The annual rainfall (around 250 mm) ensures the grapes remain healthy. They are vineyards of low yield, one or two bottles by plant. This allows a greater concentration of aromas, color and very smooth tannins; wines with great varietal expression.

Although the wine remains thirteen months in Oak barrels (90% French and 10% American), the natural features and aromatic wealth of the fruit from which is was elaborated, is preserved.

In order to maintain distinguished quality, our philosophy is to limit the production quantity. Our first production illustrates our philosophy.

Mauricio Lorca (chief winemaker at Enrique Foster and formerly of Catena and Luigi Bosca) developed his own wines from his high-altitude vineyards in Vistaflores, Uco Valley. Lorca is one of the few Argentine winemakers who believes that the true fruit and terroir of a wine should be allowed to shine through; with this philosophy he crafts his OYIKIL line.
