Once referred to by Herodotus as Oenotria, “the land of the vine pole,” southern Italy (with its ancient wine-growing history) is the third installment of our series. We’ll explore the richness of Italian wine history and the mark the ancient Greeks left on the peninsula. In discovering these new regions of the south and the islands, we’ll encounter what has been called Italy’s third noble grape varietal, Aglianico, along with a myriad of others. One of the real attractions of these wines, being relatively undiscovered, is the value that can be found. Your host for this class is Wine House Italian Buyer Lance “Montalcino, make that” Montalto. (See Wednesday, October 14 for The Wines of Northern Italy and Wednesday, October 28 for The Wines of Central Italy)
