Wine OR Wine & Food
Germany, Austria, and the French region of Alsace are all noted for their beautiful dry Rieslings and Gewurztraminers, but they also produce some other very respectable varietals. This Tuesday we’ll be tasting six different wines from these regions. Stop by between 5pm and 8pm and sample:
2007 Hopler Gruner Veltliner, Burgenland, Austria
The Austrian national grape variety is marked by its primary rock character, a light green tinge, yellow apple scents, and spicy hay flavors supported by minerals. Particularly good when served with cold starters, pastas, delicate salads or as an aperitif.
2006 Frey-Sohler Pinot Blanc, Alsace, France
Clear yellow color with aromas of white flowers. Well balanced and delicate with a soft, long finish. Excellent with quiche and souffles.
2006 Frey-Sohler Pinot Gris, Alsace, France
Rich, full bodied with a long, slightly smoky finish. Shows best with the fine cuisine, Foie gras, white meats and roasts. Drink: Now-2016.
2004 Hunawihr Secret Valley Gewurztraminer, Alsace, France
The "Secret Valley" (winery) is located in the Alsace region of France, which was created by the separation of the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest mountains. Nestled between them, Alsace benefits from a unique micro-climate with low rainfall. As a result, the grapes can ripen gradually, allowing each wine to fully develop its distinctive aromatic identity.
2006 Hopler Zweigelt, Austria
A rich bright purple color leads to an expansive fruity and mouthwatering, delicious wine. Very bright, not big on complexity, but big on pleasure. Similar to a Beaujolias, but has a depth more in tune with pinot noir than gamay. Some aging in Barrique wood imparts spicy character on the palate with a red berry finish.
This week’s Wine Of the Week (WOW).
2007 Peter Brum Vino Noire Dornfelder, Rheinhassen, Germany
Rich dark red in color. Velvety smooth with harmonic fruity aromas, miles of cherries and berries; beautifully light but well rounded finish. Perfect with all types of game, any dark meats, and pasta/red sauces. For dessert, try with dark chocolate or chocolate cheesecake. Best served lightly chilled. The #1 selling quality red wine in Germany.
