“Taste of Italy” at Khoury's Fine Wine and Spirits

Wednesday (9/9/09) 6-8pm at Khoury’s on S. Durango / Thursday (9/10/09) 6-8pm at Khoury’s on S. Eastern

Representatives from BMC Fine Spirits will be in both stores this week giving us a Taste of Italy.  We are changing up the wine tasting a little this week.  We are tasting not only unique Italian wines from all over Italy, but some very small production beers as well.  Roses, violets, elderberry, citrus honey and black Pepper, sounds like an odd combination but that’s just some of the ingredients in one of the Italian Ales beers we will be trying.  BMC is very exclusive on who they sell to and what they are sold.  The wines and beers that we will be tasting are usually found only in the best restaurants on the strip, such as Simons, B&B, Carenvino’s, and Charlie Palmers to name a few. The wines and beers we will taste are listed below…

WINES

Nicolis Valpolicella

On the palate it is light, fruity, and with a pleasant touch of acidity that leaves a clean finish. The tannins are soft and almost creamy like. Should be served with first courses -- pasta with meat-based sauces and soups, or vegetable-based entrees.

Adesso 2006 Cagnina di Romagna

The answer for those who say red wines are too dry for them. Grapey, juicy raisins, a hint of something minty and the nose; fresh wine-grape and dried-fruit flavors follow the nose, quite sweet but not sticky, with sufficient acidity to keep it from cloying.  It makes a surprisingly appealing match with the flavors of Cantonese-style stir-fried beef and green peppers. Not an everyday item for wine "geeks," but an excellent answer to the frequently asked question from those aching for a sweet red wine.

Scarbolo Tocai Friulano

It exhibits aromas of wild flowers, almonds and  some tropical aromas. On the palate it is medium to full bodied and elegant with good acidity and subtle flavors of almonds. It is very versatile and is typically served with antipasti, especially cured meats (salame, prosciutto), soups, fish and white meats

Montecchia Spumante

La Montecchia Fior d’Arancio Spumante is made from orange blossom yellow moscato grapes. It is characterized by a pale yellow color with intense aromas of orange and lemon. It has a fine, velvety perlage and a sweet, harmonic and persistent taste. This wine is an excellent accompaniment to fruit tarts and biscuits after meals

BEERS

Malthus Baluba

Rue, Apricot, pineapple and ginger (all dried) added during primary fermentation

Complex aromas of nougat, rose and hazelnut.  Rounded and full-bodied, some sweetness, long malty and earthy finish with more nutty notes and a touch of spices - dangerously drinkable

La Baladin Super

There is a delicate perfume of rose and a slightly stronger aroma of violets. Ripe banana, pear and slight pineapple follow. The taste is characterized by the unusual presence of a sublime cherry with hints of almonds and citrus.

La Fleurette

La Fleurette has an amazingly unusual character and complexity despite its very little 3.8% alc/vol. It is brewed with Pilsner malt, rye malt, Kent Goldings hops, whole roses and violets, Citrus Bee honey, Elderberry and black pepper. Notes of grapes, prunes, scent of elder?owers, roses, and violets beautiful thirst quencher in late spring and summer.
