Wine OR Wine & Food
Some call it Syrah, others Shiraz, but it’s all the same
delicious varietal. It’s believed to
have originated in the Middle East, but gained its reputation in the Rhône
region of France. Now, it’s produced in a
multitude of countries, and we’ll sample wines from three of them this Tuesday.
Stop by between 5pm and 8pm and try
some of our favorites:
2008 R Wines Bon Bon Rosé Shiraz,Australia
Vibrant ruby pink. Strawberry, raspberry, cherry and rose
petal characters with a wink of musk and spice. Juicy red berries and candy palate.
Medium bodied with a soft off-dry finish.
2006 Ferraton, Père
& Fils Crozes-Hermitage La Matiniere, Rhone Valley, France
A juicy, structured style, with iron, lavender and sanguine
notes framing the black cherry and currant fruit. An enticing herb note marks
the finish. Slightly taut for now, but should flesh out nicely with some
cellar time. Drink now through 2012. 7,500 cases made.

2006 Consilience
Syrah, Santa Barbara County, California
Full-bodied, structured, and complex with strawberry and black cherry
flavors.
2006 Step Rd Black Wing Shiraz, South Australia
Ruby-red. Red and dark berry scents are elegant and precise,
with complicating notes of sexy vanilla and baking spices. Jammy blackberry
and blackcurrant flavors are gently lifted by fresh acidity and a hint of
cracked pepper. Finishes silky and sweet, with good length.
Stephen Tanzer’s IWC: 87 Points
2006 Marquis Philips Shiraz, South Eastern Australia
Barrel-fermented and aged in predominantly American oak for 12
months. Offers up fragrant aromas of cedar, smoke, tar, blueberry, and
blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied, opulent, structured, intense, well-balanced.
Drink: Now-2016.
