BLOCK ISLAND’S ATLANTIC INN HOSTS AN EVENING OF FINE DINING AND SPECIALTY BEERS FROM ENGLAND

The Atlantic Inn presents a gourmet six-course beer dinner on Saturday, September 19th at 7 pm, featuring exquisite dishes paired with authentic specialty beers from the Samuel Smith Old Brewery located in Tadcaster, Yorkshire, England.

The evening begins with a sampling of Warm Cheddar Cheese with sunflower seeds, light mixed greens and a pink lady glaze paired with Samuel Smith’s Organic Lager, a full-bodied USDA Certified Organic lager with lots of malt and hop character.

The second course is a portion of Fish and Chips with a curry tartar sauce, presented with Samuel Smith’s India Ale. This authentic India Pale Ale is amber-colored with restrained maltiness and pronounced hop aroma.

Both food aficionados and beer enthusiasts will be delighted by expertly paired Veal Crepinette with grilled apples, sage, and onion jam accompanied by Samuel Smith’s Organic Cider. Samuel Smith has made traditional cider for decades, but it was first introduced to America in May 2008. Samuel Smith’s Organic Cider has a brilliant straw gold color, light body, and a clean apple aroma from the wine yeast used for fermentation; also, it’s naturally gluten-free.

A Braised Pork Rib with bulgur wheat, chestnuts and honey powder will be harmonized with Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale. This deep brown ale with a hint of hazelnut flavor accentuates the deep richness of the braised pork rib while cleansing the palate with its soft effervescence.

Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter will be paired with a Wild Boar Loin with kale, Yorkshire pudding, carrots, beets and a coffee au jus. The Famous Taddy Porter has a full, rich, dark velvety mouthfeel with an immensely creamy head.

The evening ends with a special dessert paired with Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.  This richly opaque ale has a silky texture and elegant complexity from the combination of roasted barley and oats used to produce it.  On 19th century labels, oatmeal stout was sometimes described as “nutritional.”

Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery was established in 1758, and maintains traditional brewing methods: their water comes from the original well; hops are weighed and added by hand; the yeast strain has been unchanged for over 100 years; and their ales are fermented in open-topped slate vessels known as Yorkshire Squares.

Brad and Anne Marthens, Keepers of the Inn are pleased to offer this special dinner under the supervision of Executive Chef Daniel Puglia. Due to limited seating, reservations are required and can be made by calling (401) 466-5883.  The cost is $60 plus tax and gratuity per person. The guest speaker for the evening is Sarah Karlavage, New England Regional Manager for Merchant du Vin, America’s premier specialty beer importer since 1978.  For more information on this beer dinner or Merchant du Vin, please contact Sarah Karlavage at 401-286-6369.
