Event Details
Wine OR Wine & Food
This promises to be a truly spectacular tasting, representing five prestigious producers and spanning 10 vintages. We'll taste 12 wines, selected to give you a profound experience of the "wine of kings" and "king of wines". Maslow 6 wine director Mollie Battenhouse will present these wines from some of the most heralded estates of the Langhe, as well as talk about Barolo in-depth. Vince Attard, of Vinifera Imports, will co-host as our partner for the evening. Vinifera specializes in older vintages of Italian wines. We have put our minds and palates together to design a truly rare and special evening not to be missed.
Icardi Barolo "Parej" 2004
2
glasses from Gambero Rosso and selected for the final tasting for the 3
glass award. 91 points from Wine Spectator magazine. "Outstanding in
this year's tastings is the heady, dark-skinned fruit-themed Barolo
Parej '04. The full-bodied, concentrated palate is supported and
refreshed by the acidity and tannic structure". (Gambero Rosso 2009
guide)
Claudio and Mariagrazia Icardi have been a stalwart house in Piedmont, presenting quality Barolo for almost 4 decades. A family of farmers on the property since 1914 were an early adopter of organic and biodynamic farming, The Icardi family are now fiercely dedicated to their hills and the cultivation of pure and healthy vines. Their Barolo, called "Parej" is a style that is a bit more lush and fruit-forward than from their golden southern exposure of their hills in Castaglione Tinella.
Guiseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate-Le Costa 2003
2
glasses from Gambero Rosso. In the 1920's, the Rinaldi family had
amassed a pedigree of almost 30 years of winemaking when they
established a set of properties in the area's prestigious sites of
Cannubi and Brunate-Le Coste. Since then three generations of Rinaldi
men have produced some of the most sensational Barolo, period. Beppe
Rinaldi who runs the winery today carries on grandfather Guiseppe's
dedication to the Nebbiolo grape as an uncompromising traditionalist
who aims to make some of the most elegant and age-worthy Barolos.
Icardi Barolo "Parej" 2001
90 points from Wine Spectator magazine.
Compare to the younger 2004 to see how this wine develops ... beautifully!
The
estate stresses the vineyards, and also the vintage, and plays down the
human factor. No chemicals are used. Traditional techniques are used in
the cellar. They have vineyards across prestigious growing zones in the
Langhe and Monferrato, and they let the personality of each come into
the wines.
Guiseppe Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi 2000
2 glasses from Gambero-Rosso.
Incredibly
smooth, with elegant floral notes. Drinks earlier than the Brunate-Le
Costa, yet ages for a very long time. Shares the archetypical
characteristics of nebbiolo and Barolo with the Brunate-Le Costa.
One of Barolo's classics, with this wine sourced from the well known Cannubi vineyard. If you like more classically styled Barolo, a wine with some of the more earthy, leathery, spicy aromatics of the nebbiolo grape, then these wines [along with the Brunate-Le Costa] are for you - and are designed for long ageing (from Vino Italiano by David Lynch & Joseph Bastianich).
E. Pira & Figli Barolo Cannubi 2000
2
glasses from Gambero Rosso. 93 points Parker. A historic estate brought
back to prominence by the Boschis family. The Barolo "Cannubi" is a
sought-after wine, and the 2000 is an outstanding vintage. This
celebrated vineyard shows beautifully, with the mature notes of
leather, berries, and tobacco.
A very special wine from a very special vintage. Chiara Boschis has received worldwide recognition for her Barolo. The 1999 bottling from the "Cannubi" slope is truly majestic. Aged in new french oak, the wine has aged beautifully and tonight is an opportunity to drink this wine at it's peak stage. "A wine of superb balance and class....It remains a captivating wine".
Oddero Barolo Rocche di Castaglione 1998
Tightly
compacted Barolo; this wine is from the gentler of the crus we're
tasting tonight. Long-ageing wines of extremely high quality made in
traditional manner, producting absolutely classic barolo wines.
This 1998 cru shows minerality and elegance.
Eraldo Viberti Barolo 1997, 1996, 1994
An
estate of only 6 acres of land, Viberti represent the smallest producer
of the evening. Eraldo Viberti is a winemaker who produces downright
delicious Barolo that captures what many have hailed as the perfect
finesse of power and fruit that Barolo can offer. Such small production
is the hallmark of Viberti and we are showing a vertical of three
vintages. These are sure to be the discovery wines of the night!
Oddero Barolo 1997, 1996
Well-focused, with depth and intensity. The first bottles of Oddero date back to 1878. For over 150 years the
Oddero
name has shined in Piedmont, making some of the finest Barolo and
staying true to what Italian would be about- respect to tradition and
family. Tonight we explore several of Oddero's finest bottles from
several vintages. A true benchmark, Oddero wines can be considered a
textbook for the evening.
"These are elegant long-aging wines with lots of earthy, Burgundian notes." -David Lynch & Joseph Bastianich
Oddero Barolo Cru Serralunga d'Alba Vigna Rionda 1995
"Dark and stormy". Elegant and long-aging with lots of earthy, Burgundian notes. (David Lynch)
Regional cheeses and charcuterie will be served.
The tasting will take place in the Vino Vino winebar, adjacent to the Maslow 6 wineshop.
